The New York Mills baseball team won two of three games last week as the Eagles defeated Pillager 14-3 and Staples-Motley 12-1. On Friday night the Eagles suffered their first loss in the conference this season as they fell to Wadena-Deer Creek by a score of 2-1 in eight innings.
This week the 13-2 Eagles, who are currently ranked second in Class A in the QRF, will travel to Park Rapids on Monday, Pillager on Tuesday and host Sebeka on Friday night.
The Eagles are currently 10-1 in the conference and lead second place Wadena-Deer Creek by a full game in the loss column. The Wolverines are 7-2 in the PRC.
Tuesday
Pillager scored first, but the NY Mills Eagles scored runs in bunches on Tuesday night. After the Huskies scored a pair of runs in the top of the first inning, the Eagles scored 14 of the next 15 runs to come away with a 14-3 win.
The Eagles took the lead in the bottom of the first inning when Derin Gaudette hit an RBI fielder’s choice to bring Jacob Guck around to score. Drey Roberts tied the game at 1-1 when he hit an RBI single to bring Gaudette around to score. Bren Salo gave the Eagles a 3-2 lead on an RBI single of his own, before Roberts scored on a Braden Ehnert sacrifice fly to make the game 4-2 in favor of NY Mills.
The Eagles broke the game open in the bottom of the third inning with 8 runs to put the game out of reach. The first eight batters of the inning reached base safely and would all later score. The first out of the inning occurred on a sacrifice fly, which made the score 12-3 in favor of the Eagles.
The game came to an end in the bottom of the fifth inning when Jonah Ruther hit a 2-run home run that also brought Ben Burkmann across the plate to end the game in walk off fashion by the 10-run rule.
Jacob Guck, Gaudette, Roberts and Salo each led the way offensively with 2 hits apiece.
Salo picked up the win on the mound as he pitched 3 scoreless innings in relief of Gaudette. Salo gave up just 1 hit, while striking out 1 hitter.

The Eagles struck first in the top of the first inning when Derin Gaudette hit a 2-run triple and Abe Carlson hit an RBI double to make the score 3-0. Friday
NY Mills and Wadena-Deer Creek had an instant classic Park Region Conference contest under the lights in Deer Creek on Friday night.
A scoreless game after seven innings, Cale Rudolph gave the Eagles some life in the top of the eighth inning when he hit an RBI double with two outs to bring Jonah Ruther across the plate to make the game 1-0 in favor of NY Mills.
Unfortunately, the Wolverines went on a two out rally of their own to end the game in walk off fashion. After the opening two hitters of the inning were retired in order WDC got some life when the Wolverines hit a double and the next hitter was walked. That’s when WDC hit a 2-run single to end the game by a score of 2-1 in eight innings.
Derin Gaudette was brilliant through the first 7 2/3 innings of the game as he gave up just 3 hits and struck out 11 batters. Bren Salo took the loss on the mound as he didn’t retire a batter, while giving up 3 hits and 2 earned runs in relief.
The lone NY Mills hits came off the bats of Jonah Johnson, Drey Roberts and Rudolph.
