The New York Mills cross country team began their season on Aug. 30 as they traveled to Staples-Motley. The team did well in a meet that had full teams for both the boys and girls.

NY Mills had a total of seven runners competing in their first 5K race as part of their team.

The girls’ team of Jada Goeson, Kaitlyn Geiser, Morgyn O’Dea, Mckenzie Draves, Macy Koljonen and Rosemary Laudenbach placed eighth out of nine teams with Goesen leading the way as the first Eagle to finish.

For the boys, Simon Synder was NY  Mills’ top runner in the JV race, while Breck Hensch led the team in the Varsity competition. Also running for the guys team were: Brian Bohn, Aiden Tumberg, Jeron Witt, Austin Geiser, and Braeden Malone.

In the junior high girls’ race, seventh grader Brielle Malone finished ninth in her first race as an Eagle.

“It was great to be able to field a full team for both our girls and our boys. Our program is improving and it is due to the hard work and efforts of both our new and our returning runners. I look for many positives this year,” said head coach Greg Esala.

On Tuesday, the NY Mills Eagles traveled to Wadena-Deer Creek.

The girls’ team placed sixth with Jada Goeson leading the way.

The boys team took 10th place, ahead of several other teams.  Breck Hensch was the top runner for the boys.

“I am very pleased with the effort of our runners.  We had a number of them who are just beginning their experience as varsity runners. Our entire team is working hard and we have already seen some notable improvement in our times,” said head coach Greg Esala.

The Eagles will return to action on Tuesday at Sonnenberg Trails north of NY Mills. The junior high meet is scheduled to begin at 4:30 p.m.
