Dane Niemi and Bode Roberts finished on top of the podium on Saturday to lead the New York Mills wrestlers at the Rodd Olson Memorial Tournament at Crookston. The tournament capped off a busy week for the wrestlers, who also competed in a triangular against Alexandria and Border West on Thursday.
This week the wrestlers will host a triangular against Osakis and Park Rapids Area on Tuesday, before competing at a tournament in Pequot Lakes over the weekend.
Thursday
NY Mills dropped a pair of duals against Alexandria Area and Border West on Thursday night.
In their dual against Alexandria, the Eagles fell by a score of 43-27. NY Mills also narrowly lost a dual to Border West by a score of 42-39.
In their match against Border West, Creed Mursu got things going in the right direction when he won a 3-0 decision over Gunner Hennessy at 106 lbs. Border West won the next three matches, before Jay Mindermann secured a pin at the 3:46 mark at 132 lbs. to make the score 18-9 in favor of Border West.
After a Border West fall at 138 lbs., NY Mills went on a bit of a run by securing wins in five of the next six matches to take a 39-30 lead. Picking up wins was Simon Snyder who won by pin at 145 lbs., Dane Niemi who won by forfeit at 152 lbs., Hunter Rust, Bode Roberts and Bren Salo all won by forfeit at 170 lbs., 182 lbs., and 195 lbs.
Unfortunately, the Buccaneers won by fall at both 220 lbs. and 285 lbs. to come away with a 42-39 win.

Saturday
Dane Niemi and Bode Roberts captured first place at the Rodd Olson Memorial Invite at Crookston on Saturday. All seven wrestlers who competed for NY Mills placed in the top five in their weight class. Sawyer Wedde also reached the championship match at 285 lbs
Niemi captured first place after defeating Hank Tellers of United North Central by a 3-0 decision. He defeated Ethan Bowman of Crookston by a 3-2 decision in the championship match to secure first place.
Roberts captured first place after winning by a 9-4 decision over Shawn Hendrickson of UNC in the opening round. He went on to defeat Payden Yeats of Walker-Hackensack-Akeley by a pin at the 2:28 mark of their semi-finals match. He defeated Hunter Knutson of Crookston by a first period pin to capture first place.
Wedde also reached the championship match by earning a pin over Connor Andress of Walker-Hackensack-Akeley in just 40 seconds. He fell to Marcas Peterson of UNC at the 4:54 mark of the match to finish in second place.
Hunter Rust captured third place when he secured a 17-2 tech fall over Mason Plautz of UNC in the third place match.
Simon Snyder also captured third place after he won by a 6-2 decision over Carter Coauette of Crookston in the third place match.
Other Eagles placing at the meet included Creed Mursu who finished in fifth place at 106 lbs. and Blake Unger placed fifth at 160 lbs.
