NYM to host two state ranked teams on Friday

New York Mills improved to 7-1 with a pair of wins last week. 

The Eagles, who are ranked second in the state, lost for the first time this season by a score of 10-0 against Class AA ninth ranked Wadena-Deer Creek. NY Mills rebounded in a big way with a pair of wins to close the week over Browerville by a score of 12-6 and Menahga by a score of 5-0.

This week the Eagles will travel to Pillager on Tuesday and will host a pair of state ranked teams in a triangular on Friday night. The Eagles will take on seventh ranked South Ridge at 1:30 p.m. and Wadena-Deer Creek at 6:15 p.m. South Ridge will take on Wadena-Deer Creek at 3:30 p.m. 

Tuesday

In a match up between two of the top ranked teams in Class A and Class AA, the Wadena-Deer Creek Wolverines were able to hand NY Mills their first loss of the season on Tuesday night by a score of 10-0. The Wolverines are currently ranked ninth in Class AA and the Eagles are ranked second in Class A. 

The Eagles had their chances, but they just couldn’t get a run across the plate as they fell to Wadena-Deer Creek by a score of 10-0. The Eagles had runners in scoring position in every inning with the exception of the fifth and final inning. They even had the bases loaded in the third and fourth innings, but were ultimately unable to get a run across the plate.

The Wolverines were able to make the most of their chances as they scored 1 run in the first inning, a pair in the third inning, 5 in the fourth inning and ended the game with a pair of runs in the second.

Thursday

NY Mills took an early lead and never looked back as they defeated Browerville by a score of 12-6 on Thursday.

The Eagles took a 1-0 lead when Jacob Guck scored on an error and added a pair of runs in the top of the third inning on a Breck Hensch 2-run single. The Eagles answered a 2-run Browerville bottom of the third inning with 2 more runs of their own  when Guck hit a 2-run double to make the game 5-2 in favor of the Eagles. 

NY Mills scored 1 more run in the fifth inning, before breaking the game open in the top of the sixth inning when they scored 6 runs. Among the highlights of the inning was an RBI double by Hensch, a 2-run double by Monte Briard and an RBI single by Guck. 

The Tigers tried to make a game of it late by scoring 3 runs in the bottom of the seventh inning, but ultimately fell by a score of 12-6. 

Guck, Bode Roberts, Hensch and Briard all finished the game with 2 hits apiece, while Brayden Ehnert picked up the win on the mound as he pitched 6 innings and gave up just 4 hits and struck out 9 batters.

Friday

NY Mills took advantage of four Menahga errors to come away with a 5-0 win over the Braves on Friday.

The Eagles opened the scoring in the top of the third inning when Bode Roberts scored on a passed ball with two outs to make the score 1-0. NY Mills added another run in the top of the sixth inning when Monte Briard scored on an error by the right fielder with two outs to make the score 2-0 in favor of the Eagles. 

Jonah Johnson gave the Eagles a bit of breathing room in the top of the seventh inning when he hit an RBI double to bring Jacob Guck around to score. Johnson scored one batter later on an error and Brayden Ehnert brought the scoring to a close when he hit a sacrifice fly to bring Bode Roberts across the plate.

  Guck picked up the win on the mound as he pitched a 4-hit shutout as he didn’t walk a batter and struck out 4 hitters in the win.
