NYM defeats MCC in eight innings at Jackson County Central tournament

New York Mills played eight games and even made a trek to just steps from the Iowa border for a tournament on Saturday.

After going 5-0 against Pillager, Bertha-Hewitt/Verndale and Frazee last week, the Eagles traveled to Jackson County Central for a tournament against a number of top Class AA schools. The Eagles lost their opening game of the day to Class AAA Worthington by a score of 3-0 and fell to Jackson County Central 12-10 in the second game of the day. The Eagles were just one of two teams to score a run against the Huskies as Worthington managed 1 run against JCC.

In third final game of the day, the Eagles beat Murray County Central by a score of 10-9 in eight innings. 

The Eagles will wrap up their regular season this week they will host Browerville/Eagle Valley on Tuesday, before traveling to Norman County East/Ulen Hitterdal on Thursday. They will wrap up their regular season on Friday with a doubleheader against Parkers Prairie in NY Mills 

Tuesday

NY Mills swept a doubleheader against Pillager on Tuesday night. 

In the first game of the day, the Eagles scored 10 runs in the third inning alone to blow past Pillager 11-6. After the opening hitter of the inning struck out, 11 hitters reached base safely in a row to help the Eagles take a 10-2 lead. Among the highlights of the inning was a 2-run RBI single by Ayla Olson, as well as RBI singles by Moriah Geiser, Haley Korkowski, Mackenzie Gilster and an RBI fielder’s choice by Aliya Gerber.

The Eagles added another run in the bottom of the fifth inning to end their scoring.

Kailey Keskitalo picked up the win on the mound as she pitched 7 innings and gave up just 2 earned runs, while striking out 10 hitters. 

In the second game of the night, the Eagles needed just 3 hits to score 14 runs on their way to a 14-0 win. NY Mills was walked 9 times in the game and was hit by 5 other pitches. They also took advantage of 6 Pillager errors in the game. 

The highlight of the game was an 8-run top of the fifth inning to eventually end the game by the 10-run rule. 

Gerber picked up the win on the mound as she pitched 5 innings and gave up just 3 hits and no runs.

Wednesday

The Eagles made quick work of Bertha-Hewitt/Verndale on Wednesday afternoon as NY Mills secured a pair of 10-run wins over the Raiders.

In the opening game of the day, the Eagles won by a score of 11-1 after they pumped out 15 hits and scored at least 1 run in every inning except for one. 

Mackenzie Gilster and Kailey Keskitalo led the way offensively as they both went a perfect 3-3 from the plate, with Gilster scoring 3 runs. The Eagles scored 1 run in the first, 2 runs in the second inning, 3 runs in the third inning, 3 more in the fifth inning and 2 more runs in the sixth inning to end the game by the 10-run rule. The game came to an end when Haley Korkowski hit a sacrifice fly to center field to bring Ayla Olson in to score from third base. 

Kailey Keskitalo picked up the win on the mound as she pitched 6 innings and gave up just 5 hits and 1 earned run.

In the second game the Eagles bats erupted for 13 hits and 14 more runs on their way to a 14-2 win. The Eagles left little doubt in the outcome of the game after scoring 7 runs in the first inning alone, before adding 5 more runs in the fourth inning and a pair of runs in the fifth inning. 

Megan Riedel went 3-4 at the plate to lead the way, which included a 3-run home run in the top of the first inning to get the scoring going. 

Aliya Gerber picked up the win on the mound as she gave up 4 hits, while giving up 2 unearned runs in the win.

Thursday

NY Mills trailed 4-0 heading into the bottom of the fourth inning, before blowing past Frazee by a score of 15-4 on Thursday. After Ariel Arno hit a 2-run single in the bottom of the fourth inning to put the Eagles on the board, NY Mills scored 7 runs in the fifth inning and 6 more in the sixth inning to end the game early by the 10-run rule. 

The game came to a close in walk-off fashion as Ayla Olson hit a 2-run home run in the bottom of the sixth inning to end the game by the 10-run rule. She finished the game by going 3-4 with 3 RBIs. 

Kailey Keskitalo picked up the win on the mound as she went 6 innings and gave up just 4 unearned runs on 6 hits. She also struck out 7 hitters.
