NYM to wrap up regular season on Wednesday

New York Mills improved to 12-2 overall after picking up three more wins last week.

The Eagles opened the week by defeating Menahga by a score of 2-0 on Monday, before edging Pillager by a score of 11-1 on Tuesday night. The week came to a close for NY Mills on Friday when they defeated Sebeka by a score of 9-1.

This week the Eagles will travel to Bertha-Hewitt/Verndale for a doubleheader on Tuesday at 4 p.m., before hosting Parkers Prairie in another conference doubleheader on Wednesday at 2 p.m. 

The Eagles are currently ranked fourth in Class A by the Minnesota Baseball Coaches Association. Other teams ranked in the top 10 in Section 6A include, third ranked Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg, fifth ranked Ashby and seventh ranked Upsala-Swanville. 

NY Mills is also ranked fifth in the QRF.

Monday

Brayden Ehnert needed just 93 pitches to pick up a 2-0 shutout over Menahga on Monday afternoon. Ehnert gave up just 7 hits and walked 1 batter as he secured an important Park Region Conference win over the Braves.

The Eagles got the scoring going in the bottom of the first inning when Bren Salo hit an RBI double down the right field line to bring Jacob Guck across the plate to score. 

The game remained 1-0 until the bottom of the fifth inning when Jonah Johnson hit a sacrifice fly to center field to bring Guck across the plate to score for the second time in the game. 

NY Mills finished with 7 hits in the game with Guck, Salo and Will Oakes each coming through with 2 hits apiece.

Tuesday

NY Mills took advantage of 5 Pillager errors as the Eagles blew past the Huskies by a score of 11-1 on Tuesday night.

The Eagles scored 5 runs in both the first and second innings, while adding another run in the third inning to come away with the 11-1 win in five innings. 

Bren Salo got the Eagles on the scoreboard in the bottom of the first inning when he hit an RBI double to bring Jacob Guck around to score. He would score two batters later when Bode Roberts hit an RBI single to make the game 2-0. The Eagles added another run on a fielder’s choice by Brayden Ehnert, as well as a pair of runs on a Will Oakes 2-run double to make the game 5-0. 

The Eagles essentially put the game out of reach one inning later when Salo hit an RBI single. Roberts hit an RBI triple, Ehnert hit an RBI single, Oakes hit an RBI single and Jonah Ruther hit an RBI single to make the game 10-0. 

The final run of the game came in the bottom of the third inning when Hunter Holtti scored on an Ehnert RBI single to make the game 11-1. 

NY Mills was led offensively by Salo, Roberts, Ehnert and Oakes who each finished with 2 hits. Ehnert and Oakes also had 3 RBIs in the win.

Salo picked up the win on the mound as he went 3 innings and gave up 4 hits and 1 earned run, while striking out 2 hitters.

Friday

A big 7-run top of the first inning was all the run support the NY Mills pitchers would need as the Eagles defeated Sebeka by a score of 9-1 on Friday night.

Nearly all of NY Mills’ runs were scored with two outs as Jacob Guck scored on an error, before Breck Hensch hit a two out single to bring Jonah Johnson around to score. Hunter Holtii then scored on a passed ball and Monte Briard hit an RBI double to make the game 4-0. A Jonah Ruther RBI single and Guck a 2-run double made the game 7-0 in favor of NY Mills.

The Eagles added two more runs in the second and fifth innings to come away with the 9-1 win.

Bode Roberts led the way offensively as he went 2-3, while Guck picked up the win on the mound as he pitched 3 innings in relief. He struck out 6 hitters and gave up just 1 hit.
