St. Peters Lutheran Church in New York Mills is trying something new this Advent season and is inviting the community to join in on the weekly opportunity.

Advent Academy is an educational twist on the Wednesday night Advent services that usually take place this time of year. At 6 p.m. each Wednesday of Advent, a meal is served at St. Peters and fellowship takes place. After everyone partakes of the meal and has their time for visiting around 6:30 p.m., a guest speaker from the community (someone from outside the church congregation) will present on a topic that they are excited or passionate about.

Speakers including Greg and Suzi Karvonen, Blaine Novak and Latham Hetland will take their turn one of these evenings to present their topic of discussion. Individuals may hear about community development, what’s going on at the school and funeral preparation among other topics from these speakers.

After the presentation of 20-30 minutes, an Evensong service will begin at 7 p.m. in the sanctuary. Community members are invited to attend and join the evening service afterward.

Advent Academy will take place on each Wednesday in Advent which will be as follows: Nov. 30, Dec. 7, Dec. 14 and Dec. 21.
