The New York Mills Eagles opened their season on Thursday night when they traveled to Battle Lake.

The Eagles stayed in the game against a talented Battle Lake team early on, however, the Battlers took over in the second half and came away with a 69-30 win.

Head coach Mike Baune said the Eagles played solid defense in the game, which kept them in the game in the first half.

Sam Kopveiler led the way offensively as he scored 7 points and pulled down 8 rebounds, while Brayden Ehnert scored 6 points in the loss.

On Saturday the Eagles made the trek north and took on the Mahnomen/Waubun Thunderbirds in non-conference action. Baune said Mahnomen/Waubun’s pressure style of tempo gave the Eagles trouble as they turned the ball over too many times and fell by a score of 66-17.

Ehnert and Kopveiler once again led the way offensively as Ehnert scored 9 points and Kopveiler scored 6.
