Roberts takes second in Alexandria

Waylon Fudge competed in the Big Ole wrestling tournament over the weekend. The 182 lbs. wrestler did not place in the tournament.

Simon Snyder took first place and Grady Roberts finished second at the 51st annual Big Ole wrestling tournament in Alexandria on Saturday.

Snyder took first after securing an 8-2 decision in the finals, while Roberts was able to make quick work of his opponent in the semi-finals, before falling by a pin in the finals.

In addition to the Big Ole tournament, the Eagles improved to 6-6 on the season as they swept a triangular against Barnesville and Walker-Hackensack-Akeley on Thursday.

This week the Eagles will travel to Park Rapids for a triangular on Thursday against the Panthers and Fertile-Beltrami, before traveling to a triangular against Frazee on Thursday. Also at Thursday’s triangular will be United Clay Becker.

Creed Mursu took fifth place at the annual Big Ole wrestling tournament in Alexandria on Saturday.

NY Mills swept a triangular on Thursday night with a commanding 66-12 win over Barnesville and an exciting 54-29 win over Walker-Hackensack-Akeley.

The Eagles dropped just three matches against the Trojans, including one by forfeit, to pick up another important section win over the Trojans. 

NY Mills won the first four matches that were actually wrestled by fall and secured eight total pins in the match. The most exciting pin came at heavyweight when Grady Roberts pinned Tim Wells with just 38 seconds remaining in the match. He was trailing by a 12-7 score at the time of the pin.

Also securing pins for the Eagles were Aiden Meech, Finn Wallgren, Creed Mursu, Austin Geiser, Brandt Malone, Simon Snyder and Jon Rinerson.

Simon Snyder took first place and Grady Roberts finished in second place at the 51st annual Big Ole wrestling tournament in Alexandria on Saturday. 

Snyder, who is currently ranked seventh in the state, opened the tournament with back-to-back second period falls to advance to the championship match. In the finals, Snyder was able to secure an 8-2 decision over Jett Olson of Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg to capture first place.

At heavyweight, Roberts received a bye in the opening round, before defeating Treston Nichols of Badger-Greenbush-Middle River by a fall at the 1:41 mark of his match to advance to the finals. In the finals, Roberts fell to Hudson Scholten of Minneota by a fall at the 1:29 mark of his match to take second. 

Also placing in the top three overall was Brandt Malone, who took third place at 145 lbs. Malone fell to Brock Fier of Minneota by a fall in the semi-finals. After dropping to the consolation bracket, Malone picked up a pin early in the second period over William Rotz of Barnesville to advance to the third place match. Malone then picked up a 5-1 decision over a familiar opponent as he was able to edge Jay Mindermann, also of NY Mills, in the third place match to take third. Mindermann took fourth place at 145 lbs.
