Eagles jump to second place in PRC

The New York Mills Eagles picked up three wins last week, but had their seven game winning streak snapped by Frazee on Saturday afternoon.

The Eagles secured three important Park Region Conference wins by defeating Menahga 43-28, Sebeka 67-21 and Wadena-Deer Creek 51-35 to improve to 6-2 in the conference and 9-7 overall. Since the start of the New Year the Eagles are 8-2 overall.

This week the Eagles will travel to Menahga on Tuesday, before traveling to Sebeka on Thursday and Pillager on Friday. 

Monday

After scoring just 11 points in the first half, and trailing 18-11 at halftime, the NY Mills offense erupted in the second half as the Eagles defeated the Menahga Braves by a score of 43-28 on Monday night. The Eagles held Menahga to just three field goals in the second half as NY Mills outscored the Braves 32-10 in the final 18 minutes of action.

NY Mills was led offensively by Alayna Baune and Ayla Olson who scored 10 points apiece, while Aidyn Baune had a solid game with 7 points. Kali Olson chipped in with 6 points, Bella Bauck and Kailey Keskitalo each scored 4 points and Annika Dunrud rounded out the scoring with 2 points.

Tuesday

NY Mills had one of its best offensive games of the season and surrendered just 21 points to Sebeka on their way to a 67-21 win over the Trojans on Tuesday night. 

Sebeka scored just 9 points in the first half as Kali Olson scored 14 points in the first half points and Ayla Olson finished with 12 points in the first half as they outscored the entire Trojan team by themselves. After leading 43-11 at halftime, the Eagles were able to get some extended playing time for a number of reserves as they picked up another win in the conference.

Kali Olson led the way offensively with 22 points, while Ayla Olson also reached double figures with 13. Alayna Baune scored 8 points in the first half, while Aidyn Baune and Bella Bauck each scored 7 points, Grace Brasel scored 4 points and Katherin Garcia, Kailey Keskitalo and Abby Riedel rounded out the scoring with 2 points apiece.

Thursday

NY Mills increased their winning streak to seven games with a 51-35 win over Wadena-Deer Creek on Friday night. To make matters sweeter, the win on Thursday avenged a 72-56 loss to the Wolverines earlier this season.

NY Mills led by a score of 28-19 at halftime and outscored the Wolverines by a 23-16 margin in the second half to come away with their sixth conference win of the season. With the win the Eagles took over second place in the conference with a record of 6-2 and trail just 9-0 Henning in the conference. 

The Eagles once again dominated in the paint as Kali Olson with 13 points, Alayna Baune with 11 points and Ayla Olson with 10 points all reached double figures. Maya Radniecki scored 7 points, Kailey Keskitalo scored each of her 6 points in the second half, while Aidyn Baune and Bella Bauck each scored both of their 2 points from the free throw line in the first half. 

Saturday

NY Mills had its seven game winning streak snapped on Saturday afternoon as the Eagles fell to Frazee by a score of 56-49. The game was tied at 24-24 at halftime, but Frazee hit four 3-pointers in the second half alone and went 14-20 from the free throw line to hold off a charging Eagles team late in the second half.

The Eagles found quite a bit of success in the game down low as Kali Olson led the way for NY Mills with 14 points, while her sister Ayla Olson finished with 13 points. Alayna Baune scored 10 points, while Bella Bauck scored 7, Annika Dunrud hit a 3-pointer to finish with 3 points and Kailey Keskitalo rounded out the scoring with 2 points.
