New York Mills defeats WDC in walk-off fashion

New York Mills won for the 11th time in its past 12 games and improved to 13-3 overall with three more wins last week. 

On Tuesday night the Eagles defeated Wadena-Deer Creek on a suicide squeeze as the rain was falling at Smith Park by a score of 4-3, before coming away with a pair of lopsided wins against Brandon-Evansville and Sebeka on Thursday and Friday night.

On Tuesday the Eagles will travel to Pillager, before traveling to Wadena-Deer Creek on Friday in their lone action of the week. 

With the rain coming down, the New York Mills Eagles celebrate a thrilling 4-3 win in eight innings after laying down a successful suicide squeeze. 

Tuesday

Heading into the top of the seventh inning, NY Mills looked poised to knock off Wadena-Deer Creek as the Eagles led by a score of 2-0. Unfortunately, the Wolverines scored 3 runs on a two out bases loaded double to give them their first lead of the game. 

With two outs of their own in the bottom of the seventh inning, DaShaun Robinson hit a pop up that brought Teegan Lausten across the plate to tie the game at 3-3. 

After Will Oakes sent the Wolverines down in order in the top of the eighth inning, the Eagles were able to load up the bases with just one out in the bottom of the eighth inning. That’s when Hunter Holtti laid down a suicide squeeze that brought Brayden Ehnert across the plate and end the game in dramatic fashion by a score of 4-3. 

Holtti led the way offensively with 2 hits and a pair of RBIs, while Bode Roberts chipped in with 2 hits of his own. 

Oakes picked up the win on the mound as he pitched 1 inning and struck out a pair of hitters.

Thursday

Brayden Ehnert and Jon Rinerson combined to throw a 2-hit shut out and struck out 11 hitters as the Eagles came away with an 8-0 win over Brandon Evansville.

The Eagles opened the scoring in the top of the first inning when Ehnert and Bode Roberts hit back-to-back RBI singles. 

The score remained 2-0 until the top of the seventh inning when Ehnert hit a 2-run bases loaded double, Bode Roberts brought a run across the plate on an error, Ehnert scored on a passed ball and Isaac Page hit a 2-run double down the right field line to make the score 8-0. 

The Eagles were led offensively by Jonah Ruther, Ehnert and Roberts with 2 hits apiece. Ehnert had 3 RBIs, while Roberts and Page each finished with 2 RBIs in the win. 

Friday

NY Mills scored 6 runs in the bottom of the first inning and added 7 more in the bottom of the fourth inning to come away with a 13-3 win on Friday night. The Eagles outhit the Sebeka Trojans by an 11-2 margin.

The Eagles got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the first inning when DaShaun Robinson earned a bases loaded walk. Will Oakes followed with a 2-run single, before Sam Kopveiler followed with a 2-run single of his own. The Eagles scored another run on a wild pitch to make the game 6-0 after the first inning. 

In the bottom of the fourth inning, the opening nine hitters of the inning reached base safely as the Eagles jumped out to a 13-0 lead. Among the highlights of the inning were RBI singles by Brayden Ehnert, Bode Roberts and Jon Rinerson; a 2-run single by Oakes and an RBI double by Waylen Fudge. 

Oakes had a big game for the Eagles as he went 2-3 with 2 runs scored and 4 RBIs in the win. He also recorded the final two outs of the game after Sebeka was able to score 3 runs and get the bases loaded with just 1 out. 

Robinson picked up the win on the mound as he gave up just 2 hits and struck out 2 batters over 4 innings of work.
