NYM falls to WDC in PRC action

The top ranked New York Mills Eagles split a pair of Park Region Conference games last week to improve to 14-4 overall. After defeating Pillager by a score of 9-3 in 11 innings on Tuesday night, the Eagles fell to Wadena-Deer Creek by a score of 5-2 on Friday.

NY Mills wrapped up its regular season on Monday night when by hosting Bertha-Hewitt/Verndale in a doubleheader. The sub section tournament will kick off next Tuesday night. 

The Eagles are currently ranked second in the QRF are ranked first in the state by the Minnesota Baseball Coaches Association. 

Tuesday

NY Mills outhit Pillager 17-4, but needed 11 innings to get by the Huskies by a score of 9-3. 

After Pillager scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the first inning, Waylen Fudge put the Eagles on the scoreboard in the top of the fourth inning thanks to a fielder’s choice to make the score 2-1 in favor of the Huskies.

The Eagles tied the game in the top of the sixth inning when Fudge hit another fielder’s choice to bring DaShaun Robinson across the plate to make the score 2-2. 

The score would remain tied until a wild top of the 11th inning when NY Mills scored 7 runs that was highlighted by a bases clearing Jonah Ruther double that brought 3 runs across the plate. Brayden Ehnert made the score 7-2 in favor of the Eagles when he hit a 2-run triple and Bode Roberts gave NY Mills an 8-2 lead when he hit a sacrifice fly to right field to bring Ehnert across the plate to score. Sam Kopveiler ended the scoring with an RBI single with two outs to make the score 9-2. 

The Huskies added a run in the bottom of the 11th inning, but NY Mills hung on for a 9-3 win. 

Robinson led the way offensively for the Eagles as he had 4 hits, while Roberts finished with 3 hits. Ruther had a pair of doubles and 3 RBIs in the win.

Roberts picked up the win on the mound as he went 1 inning and gave up just 1 hit and 1 earned run. 

Friday

A Rowland Dykhoff 2-run single in the top of the fourth inning gave NY Mills an early 2-1 lead over Wadena-Deer Creek on Friday night. Unfortunately, WDC scored 4 runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to come away with a 5-2 win over the Eagles. 

NY Mills finished with just 3 hits in the loss, while Brayden Ehnert took the loss on the mound after going 6 innings and giving up just 7 hits and 4 earned runs, while striking out 5 hitters.
