NYM to open sub section playoffs on Tuesday

New York Mills swept Bertha-Hewitt/Verndale last Monday night, and in the process, clinched a share of the Park Region Conference championship. The Eagles tied Otter Tail Central with a record of 11-3 in conference action as both teams prepare for the section tournament, which will kick off on Tuesday night.

In their first game of the night, the Eagles defeated the Raiders by a score of 11-1.

The team got the scoring underway early with a big 3-run bottom of the first inning, highlighted by an RBI double by Brayden Ehnert and a pair of RBI singles by Will Oakes and DaShaun Robinson. 

The Eagles broke the game wide open in the bottom of the third inning when Robinson connected on a 3-run home run over the left field fence. 

Isaac Page, Jon Rinerson and Ehnert all hit RBI singles in the inning as well.

Ehnert led the way offensively with 3 hits, while Robinson finished with 2 hits and 4 RBIs. Robinson also picked up the win on the mound as he went 4 innings and gave up just 1 unearned run. He struck out 5 hitters and gave up 5 hits. 

In the second game of the night, NY Mills scored 8 runs in the final 2 innings to come away with a 12-6 win over the Raiders.

Trailing 6-4 heading into the top of the sixth inning, Jonah Ruther brought the Eagles to within 1 run when he scored on a passed ball. Two batters later, Robinson tied the score at 6-6 with a sacrifice fly to left field. 

All tied up in the top of the seventh inning, Jonah Ruther executed a suicide squeeze to bring Finn Roder across the plate to make the score 7-6. Ehnert gave the Eagles a bit of breathing room just two batters later when he hit a 2-run double to make the score 9-6. Waylen Fudge followed later in the inning with a 2-run single and Sam Kopveiler made the score 12-6 when he followed with an RBI single. 

The Raiders went down in order in the bottom of the seventh inning to complete the comeback for the Eagles. 

Ehnert, Fudge, Kopveiler and Rowland Dykhoff all finished with a pair of hits apiece to lead the way for NY Mills. 

Will Oakes picked up the win on the mound as he pitched the final 3 innings and gave up 2 hits and 2 earned runs, while striking out 6 hitters. 

Ruther started the game for the Eagles and pitched 4 innings, while giving up 8 hits and 2 earned runs. He also struck out 3 hitters. 

NY Mills will open the sub section tournament on Tuesday night at home. The sub section tournament seedings were not available at the time of press. After Tuesday’s games, the sub section tournament will move to Evansville and Ashby on June 1 with the sub section championship set for June 1 at 5 p.m. in Evansville.
