The New York Mills Millers swept a doubleheader with the Vergas Loons on Sunday afternoon. The pair of wins improved the Millers to 7-2 overall after they fell to Park Rapids on Friday night by a score of 8-7.

This week the Millers will host Sebeka on Friday night at 7:30 p.m., while the Bluffton Braves will travel to Vergas on Sunday afternoon at 1:30 p.m. The Deer Creek Shockers will host Vergas on Friday night, before hosting Park Rapids on Saturday afternoon at 1:30 p.m.

Friday

NY Mills scored runs in five of the nine innings, but came out on the short end of an 8-7 game to Park Rapids on Friday night. The two teams combined for 26 hits in an exciting game that went down to the wire.

In fact, the Millers had the tying run on second base and winning run on first base with just one out in the bottom of the ninth inning, but were unable to get them across the plate. The Millers eventually stranded the bases loaded after Brandon Kupfer earned a walk with two outs in the inning.

The Millers took an early 2-1 lead on Friday night when Maison Roberts and Jonah Johnson brought runs across the plate with fielder’s choices.

After Park Rapids tied the game at 2-2 in the top half of the second inning, Brayden Ehnert put the Millers back in front with a fielder’s choice that resulted in a double play to give NY Mills a 3-2 lead.

Roberts made the score 4-2 just one inning later when he hit a fly ball to center field. The Millers kept the offensive onslaught going in the bottom of the fourth inning when Ehnert hit into another fielder’s choice to bring a runner around from third base and give the Millers a 5-2 lead.

Unfortunately that’s when the Park Rapids Esox began to take over as they scored a run in the top of the fifth inning and 3 runs in the top of the sixth inning on a bases loaded single to give them a 6-5 lead.

Trailing 8-5 in the bottom half of the eighth inning, the Millers made a late charge when Roberts hit a 2-run home run to make the score 8-7 in favor of Park Rapids, but the Millers would eventually leave the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth inning to fall 8-7.

Gaudette led the way offensively for the Millers as he had 3 hits, while Roberts finished with 4 RBIs.

Jacob Guck took the loss on the mound as he pitched 2 innings in relief and gave up 4 hits and 3 earned runs.

Sunday

NY Mills swept a doubleheader with the Vergas Loons on Sunday afternoon by scores of 5-2 and 10-1.

In the opening game of the day, NY Mills gave up just 1 hit to the Loons as they came away with a 5-2 win in seven innings.

The Millers broke a scoreless tie in the top of the fifth inning when Adam Patron hit a sacrifice fly to center field, before Jacob Guck hit a triple to bring Hunter Holtti across the plate. The final run of the inning came on a Brandon Kupfer RBI double to make the score 3-0.

After the Loons scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth inning on an error and a wild pitch, the Millers added a pair of insurance runs in the top of the seventh inning when Derin Gaudette hit a two out RBI triple and Guck followed with an RBI single of his own to make the score 5-2.

The Loons went down in order in the bottom half of the inning to give the Millers a 5-2 win.

Caden Roberts picked up the win on the mound as he went 5 innings and gave up just 1 hit and struck out 5 batters.

In the nightcap, the Millers scored runs in bunches as they scored 2 runs in the second and sixth inning and 3 runs in the third and fourth inning to come away with a 10-1.

Trailing 1-0 in the bottom of the second inning, Jonah Johnson scored on an error and Adam Patron hit an RBI single to put the Millers in front 2-1. The Millers added 3 more runs in the bottom of the third inning on a sacrifice fly by Caden Roberts and back-to-back bases loaded walks to make the score 5-1. The Millers would go on to down the Loons by a score of 10-1.

Brandon Kupfer led the way offensively for the Millers with 3 hits, while Caden Roberts finished with a pair of hits and 4 RBIs.

Hunter Holtti picked up the win in relief as he went 5 1/3 innings and gave up just 3 hits, while striking out 8 hitters.
