NYM falls to Perham 8-5 in regular season home finale

The New York Mills Millers came out on the short end of an 8-5 game to the Perham Pirates in their final regular season home game on Friday night.

After Perham took a 4-1 lead in the top of the fifth inning, Brandon Kupfer connected on a 2-run home run in the bottom of the fifth inning as part of a 3-run inning to tie the game up at 4-4. Perham added a run in the sixth inning and 3 more in the top of the eighth inning to eventually come away with an 8-5 win over the Millers. 

The Millers, who fell to 10-5 overall with the loss, outhit the Pirates by a 10-6 margin. Jacob Guck and Kupfer led the way with 3 hits apiece. 

A total of six pitchers combined to pitch 9 innings on Friday night. Jonah Johnson pitched the opening 4 innings of the game and gave up just 2 hits and 3 earned runs, while striking out 7 hitters. 

Skylar Mursu came into the game in the fifth inning and took the loss on the mound as he gave up 2 hits and 1 earned run. Brayden Ehnert pitched part of the sixth inning, but didn’t record an out, while Hunter Holtti pitched 2 innings, Guck pitched 1 inning and Dashaun Robinson pitched a scoreless ninth inning in the loss.

In addition to Friday’s game, the Millers traveled to Midway on Sunday afternoon in their regular season finale. Results from that game were not available at the time of press.

The Millers and Bluffton Braves will open the Region 14C tournament next weekend. The Millers received the third seed and will open the playoffs against sixth seeded Park Rapids at Russ Jacobson Field on Friday, Aug. 4 at 7:30 p.m. The winner of the game will take on either second seeded Midway, or the seventh seed from 14C on Saturday, Aug. 5 at 8 p.m. in Perham. The Region 14C championship game will be held on Saturday, Aug. 12 in Perham. 

The Braves received the fourth seeded and will open their playoffs on Friday, Aug. 4 at 7:30 p.m. against fifth seeded Nimrod. The game will be held in Deer Creek. If they win the game the Braves will take on either top seeded Perham or the eventual eighth seed on Saturday, Aug. 5 at 5 p.m. in Perham. 

The top two teams from Region 14C will advance to the state tournament, which will be held in Dassel, Delano and Litchfield beginning on August. 18.
