The New York Mills cross country team will kick off their season on Thursday as they host a meet at Sonnenberg Trails just north of NY Mills. The meet will begin at 10 a.m. and feature several local teams who are gearing up for another busy fall of cross country meets in the region.

This season the Eagles will once again be led by head coach Greg Esala and four letter winners who will bring a wealth of experience back to the course. Returning letter winners include: Jeron Witt, Elijah Geiser, Morgyn O’Dea and Katherin Garcia.

Esala said Dawson Seelhammer and Maggie Weller are two non-letter winners who could also make an impact on the varsity level this year. They will look to fill in the holes left by seniors Macy Koljonen, Simon Snyder, Kaitlyn Geiser and Aaron Tumberg who all graduated last year.

Esala said the goal this season is to continue working hard and improving from meet-to-meet.

“No matter how many runners we have out, I enjoy working with these athletes who are willing to push themselves to do their best,” said Esala.

Now with three classes for state cross country, Esala said the section will take a much different look this season. As far as the conference, Esala said Wadena-Deer Creek and United North Central will likely be the teams to beat.
