New York Mills couldn’t overcome several costly turnovers and mistakes as the Eagles fell to Walker-Hackensack-Akeley by a score of 19-7 on Friday night. The Eagles and Wolves were tied 7-7 at halftime, but a pair of second half touchdowns proved to be the difference for WHA in the game.

“A tough loss for us we didn’t execute and play very well in most phases of the game,” said head coach Matt Radniecki. “The kids are working hard but we are beating ourselves with mistakes and turnovers. We have to get better at protecting the ball and not making the little mistakes and trusting in our teammates that they will do their job. We will continue to battle and work to get better in all phases of the game.”

WHA took a 7-0 lead in the second quarter on a 2-yard touchdown run, before Teagan Lausten tied the game up at 7-7 with a 4-yard touchdown run and a point after kick by DaShaun Robinson.

The Wolves took a 13-7 lead in the third quarter on an 11-yard pass, before scoring on an 8-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter to end the scoring.

This week the Eagles, who are 1-3 overall will host Highway 10 rival Wadena-Deer Creek on Friday night.

“Playing WDC is good for us as we are rivals and we should have no problem getting ready for this game this week,” said Radniecki.

The Wolverines are 1-3 overall and average 13 points per game on offense, while giving up 20.5 points per game on defense. The Eagles, on the other hand, average 12.8 points per game on offense, while giving up 17.8 points per game on defense.

In addition to the varsity team, the JV football team defeated Wadena-Deer Creek by a score of 14-0. Radniecki said the team played well and were able to get the win over the Wolverines.
