New York Mills played well on both the offensive and defensive end of the field on Friday night, but 7 turnovers proved to be too much to overcome as the Eagles fell to Breckenridge by a score of 32-6.
“A tough game for us we actually played well in many parts of the game,” said head coach Matt Radniecki. “We had 7 turnovers to their 1. You can’t win any games with a -6 turnover ratio. We practice and work on it but for whatever reason it just has really affected us this year.”
After a scoreless first quarter, Breckenridge jumped out to a 14-0 lead at halftime after scoring on a 25-yard touchdown pass and a 6-yard run.
The score remained 14-0 in favor of Breckenridge until the Cowboys scored on a pair of touchdown passes to open the fourth quarter on a 10-yard and 45-yard pass to take a 26-0 lead.
The Eagles got on the scoreboard midway through the fourth quarter when Teagan Lausten raced down the field on a 42-yard touchdown run to take the score 26-6. The two-point conversion failed and Breckenridge was able to score a late touchdown on a 21-yard run to make the game 32-6 in favor of the Cowboys.
Despite the loss, Radniecki said the Eagles played hard on both the offensive and defensive ends of the field. He said the big difference was the turnovers and just a few big plays that Breckenridge was able to make on the offensive end of the field that led to points.
“The kids played hard and our line and backs did a nice job of running the ball, we just have to learn to finish drives and get points,” said Radniecki. “The defense, for the most part did their job, but a few big plays hurt us and a couple of missed assignments didn’t help either.”
Offensively the Eagles were led by Lausten who rushed 24 times for 113 yards and a touchdown. Defensively, Bode Roberts had 11 total tackles and 2 tackles for a loss.
The loss drops the Eagles to 2-4 overall as they prepare for Staples-Motley for NY Mills’ annual homecoming game.
“We will continue to work hard and we play a very good Staples team on Friday night in New York Mills,” said Radniecki. “It will be good for us to have homecoming and I hope our students enjoy the week in school.”
The Cardinals come into the game with a record of 5-1 overall, after defeating Parkers Prairie by a score of 26-0 on Friday night. Staples-Motley is averaging 35.8 points per game on offense, while giving up just 14.2 points per game on defense.
The Eagles are 2-4 overall and average 11.5 points per game on offense, while giving up 18.5 points per game on defense.
In addition to the varsity game, the NY Mills JV team defeated Frazee last week by a score of 14-12. Radniecki said the team played well and made some big plays when they needed. He said the group is getting better and he is happy with how they continue to work and improve.
