Kohler to highlight a busy month at NYM Library

0Summer Ottertail resident to share experience of 1,900-mile canoe trip

The New York Mills Public Library has a variety of events lined up for November that are free and open to all. The library will be closed on Saturday, Nov. 11 and Thursday, Nov. 23 for Veterans Day and Thanksgiving, respectively.
Passport Series
Becca Huebsch will be sharing all about her African adventures in providing health care services to some of the hardest reaches of South Sudan. The event, sponsored by Elevate, will take place on Wednesday, Nov. 1 at 10:30 a.m. in the library meeting room.
Author Program
Author Hank Kohler will be sharing his stories, pictures, and life lessons from his two-month, 1,900-mile canoe trip adventure. This trip took place 42 years after he made another trip, starting from the same location, with three companions as they traveled up the river to Hudson Bay. Kohler’s book, “One4Water” highlighted conservation efforts on the Mississippi River.
This event will take place on Thursday, Nov. 2 at 6:30 p.m. in the library. It is free and open to all, but pre-registration is encouraged by calling 385-2436. Kohler’s books will be available for purchase.
Smart911
A session on Smart911, a portal that provides public safety information during an emergency, will take place on Wednesday, Nov. 8 at 10 a.m., 1 p.m, and 5 p.m. at the library. Participants will learn about the benefits of Smart911 and how to get registered for a Smart911 profile.
The event is sponsored by Elevate and Otter Tail County to help promote emergency preparedness to keep families safety in mind.
Technology 101
Another Elevate-sponsored event, Intro to MyChart will go over the navigation of MyChart and how to discover the time-saving benefits of having medical information in one place: ready and accessible at any time.
This event will take place on Thursday, Nov. 9 at 2 p.m. in the library meeting room. Make sure to register for the event as the classes are limited to 10 attendees.
Lego Club
The ongoing Lego Club is open to all kids ages 5-12 and will meet again on Tuesday, Nov. 14 from 3:30-4:30 p.m. at the library. A building challenge and time to free-build makes for a fun and develop fine motor skills, eye/hand coordination, problem solving and other benefits. Coffee Talks
The Continental Divide Brew Pub is the talk of the town lately and representatives from the business will be in-person to give residents the latest scoop on the incoming restaurant in NY Mills. The event will take place on Wednesday, Nov. 15 at 10:30 a.m. in the library meeting room.
Amy Dallman will be explaining the FILE, which is a summary record of financial information, investments and insurance, legal documents, and estate management, which make up the acrostic FILE. The record provides a format for planning and starting discussion with loved ones in the event of an emergency or death.
Beginning estate planning, power of attorney, and getting information in order is imperative to all adults as emergencies and health crises don’t arrive with any warning. This event will take place on Wednesday, Nov. 29 at 10:30 a.m. in the library meeting room.
