NYM falls to Pelican Rapids, Park Rapids in a pair of close matches

The New York Mills Eagles wrapped up the 2023 portion of their schedule with a pair of close losses at a home triangular on Thursday, Dec. 21.

The Eagles dropped a match against Section 6A foe Pelican Rapids by a score of 35-33, as well as a 37-31 match to Park Rapids Area. 

In their dual against Park Rapids, the Eagles secured four wins by either forfeit or pin, including back-to-back pins by Aiden Meech and Carlyle Tumberg at 114 and 121 lbs. respectively, but they were unable to overtake the Panthers and fell by a score of 37-31 on December 21. 

Creed Mursu broke a 12-12 tie at 133 lbs., as he secured an 11-6 decision over Aiden Maanum to give the Eagles a 15-12 lead. 

The Panthers pulled ahead at 139 lbs. when the Eagles were open and followed that win with another pin and major decision to take a 28-15 lead. 

Carlyle Tumberg secured a pin over Heath Safratowich of Park Rapids on December 21.

Austin Geiser got NY Mills back on track with a major decision at 160 lbs., before Ashton Lohmann secured a pin at 189 lbs. and Bode Roberts won by forfeit at 215 lbs. to make the score 34-31 in favor of the Panthers. 

Needing a decision to tie the match, or a major decision to give the Eagles the win, Grady Roberts came up just short at heavyweight as he fell to D’Andre Johnson by a 9-4 decision to give the Panthers at 37-31 win over NY Mills. 

Wyatt Helmbrecht made his varsity wrestling debut against Park Rapids Area on December 21.

With the losses the Eagles ended the opening slate of games with a record of 5-4 overall. They will return to the mat on Thursday when they host Staples-Motley and Wadena-Deer Creek in a triangular. On Friday the Eagles will travel to Casselton, N.D. for a two-day tournament.
