NYM defeats WDC in home dual

Thirty teams from across North and South Dakota, as well as Minnesota, converged on Casselton, N.D. over the weekend for the annual Central Cass Lettermen’s Tournament.

Bode Roberts and Aiden Meech both found the podium in Casselton as Roberts took second place at 215 lbs. and Meech took fourth place at 107 lbs. 

Meech advanced to the semi-finals with a 10-2 major decision in the second round of the tournament, as well as a win by forfeit in the quarterfinals. He fell to Ryan Vetter of South Border by a fall to drop to the consolation bracket. The NY Mills wrestler wasted little time in getting back in the win column as he won by a first period pin over Gregory Ramberg of Fertile-Beltrami in just 1:31 to advance to the third place match.

Unfortunately, Meech came out on the short end of a 6-3 decision to Walker Miller of Ellendale-Edgeley-Kulm to come away with fourth place.

Roberts pinned his way to the championship match with three straight falls, before he squared off with Shane Nitschke of South Border. With a combined 34-2 record between the two wrestlers, the match went down to the wire before Nitschke was able to pull out a 7-4 decision to hand Roberts a tough second place finish.

Thursday

NY Mills improved to 6-5 on the season as they split a triangular against Staples-Motley and Wadena-Deer Creek on Thursday night. 

In their match against the Wolverines, the Eagles dominated in the upper weights as they won six of the final seven matches of the night to come away with a 42-21 win. 

With the match tied 15-15 heading into the 145 lbs. match, NY Mills put the dual out of reach when Weston Simpson secured a pin at the 4:37 mark of the match. Elijah Geiser and Austin Geiser followed with decisions at 152 lbs. and 160 lbs., before the Wolverines made the score 27-21 heading into the final three matches of the night. 

Blake Unger secured a major decision over Seth Stroeing at 189 lbs., before Bode Roberts put the match out of reach with a tech fall at 215 lbs. Grady Roberts put the icing on the cake when he secured a pin over Matthew Wegscheid of WDC at the 3:53 mark of the match to make the score 42-21 in favor of the Eagles.

In their other match of the day, the Eagles fell to Staples-Motley by a score of 61-6
