Doug and Dean Salo were recently inducted into the Minnesota State Dave Bartelama Wrestling Hall of Fame. The New York Mills natives and brothers were recognized for the honor during the Jan. 4 wrestling match in NY Mills. 

The following is the speech given by former wrestling coach Rich Ericksrud to honor the pair being inducted into the hall of fame: 

Hello, my name is Richard Ericksrud. For those of you who may not know me, I am a long-time member of the New York Mills Wrestling Family. The New York Mills Wrestling Family is made up of many individuals and families who share a passion for wrestling and true caring and love for one another.

Today I have the privilege of announcing that two members of the NYM Wrestling Family are being inducted into the Minnesota State Dave Bartelama Wrestling Hall of Fame.

The Dave Bartelama Wrestling Hall of Fame is a program that recognizes people who have excelled as athletes, coaches and/or contributors to Minnesota Wrestling. The HOF program is sponsored by the Minnesota State Wrestling Coaches Association.  Selection for this honor is made extra special because recipients are selected by their colleagues at the state level.

Doug and Dean Salo, would you please come forward.

As Doug and Dean’s lifetime wrestling coach and family friend, I have had the privilege of witnessing their incredible journey, both as athletes and as exceptional leaders and mentors.

Both brothers possessed, at a young age, rare wisdom about the realities of life and the ability to apply that wisdom to events and challenges life put in front of them.

Their impact as coaches and educators cannot be overstated.  The Salo brothers’ philosophy is grounded in pursuing excellence while simultaneously displaying compassionate understanding for each individual’s unique circumstances. They consistently tied the lessons learned in wrestling to the broader tapestry of life, emphasizing the importance of character development and personal growth.

Doug and Dean’s contributions as wrestlers, coaches, and leaders go far beyond their impressive list of personal achievements. Their profound impact on the lives of numerous individuals is a testament to their exceptional talents and unwavering commitment to the pursuit of excellence and healthy living choices.

Congratulations Doug and Dean on being inducted, as brothers, into the Dave Bartelama Wrestling Hall of Fame.
