The New York Mills speech team for their success at their first varsity meet of the season. Thirteen of the team’s members competed at the Otter Otterations tournament in Fergus Falls last Saturday. Three students advanced to the Final Round in their events. Five students advanced to the Next-In Honor Final Round in their events. Simon Resing placed sixth in Informative Speaking Finals with his speech on the future of nuclear fusion. Brooke Sonsolla placed fifth in Discussion Finals (the discussion tasks this year surround the topic of Communication Barriers.)  Julia Johnson placed sixth in Great Speeches Finals with her analysis of Emma Watson’s Speech for Gender Equality at the UN Women HeForShe campaign. Elliot Frost placed fourth in Dramatic Interpretation Next-In Honor Finals with his interpretation of the film adaptation of The Perks of being a Wallflower. Payton Lausten placed fourth in Prose Interpretation Next-In Honor Finals with her interpretation of Tamira Ireland Stone’s Young Adult Novel Every Last Word. Garrett Uselman placed fifth in Humorous interpretation Next-In Honor Finals with his interpretation of an episode of the Netflix series Young Sheldon. Owen Johnson and Shaila Roberts placed fifth in Duo Interpretation with their interpretation of Bradley Walton’s comedy skit Allergic to Idiots. The team placed ninth overall. On Saturday the team traveled to Dilworth-Glyndan-Felton for another varsity meet.
