New York Mills just gained another police officer for their full-time roster.

Logyn Tharaldson joined the NY Mills Police Department on a part-time basis last September, but just recently became a full-time employee.

Tharaldson’s journey to becoming a police officer started with an application to Alexandria Technical & Community College where he was able to begin his schooling for a law enforcement degree and graduate in May of 2023.

“I’ve had a deep desire to serve in some capacity and law enforcement kind of stuck out to me as it is a job that’s needed everywhere in the country right now,” said Tharaldson. “I saw my place within that community, so I decided to look into what steps are necessary to become a police officer and so I enrolled in Alex. Tech. I did the two year program there, graduated, took my exam and here I sit today.”

Tharaldson grew up in Saint Cloud, Minn. and graduated high school there, but being born in Perham and having a majority of family are this area, he decided to make the move to this area. Only having joined the community fairly recently, he enjoys meeting new people in the community.

“My favorite part of my job is getting to interact with people that you normally wouldn’t interact with,” he said. “As an officer, your main job is to interact with people, and know who’s in your community. To get to know the friendly faces, mainly talking to people, getting to know people is my favorite part of law enforcement…and how everyday is different. That’s a close second.”

Tharaldson lives in NY Mills with his wife and daughter, as well as his trusty dog. Having enjoyed interacting with children in the past, it’s especially true for Tharaldson now as a new father.

“Going into the school during training was pretty nice,” he said. “Being able to interact with the kids. It’s something you don’t typically get to do as a civilian, just walk into a school and go and interact with the kids. The kids love cops, so it’s always nice. They always have plenty of questions to ask you.”

While Tharaldson continues at the NY Mills Police Department in a larger capacity, he is excited to keep learning and serving the community.

“I’m looking forward to gaining as much experience as I possibly can in NY Mills and being able to serve the community to the best of my abilities,” he said.

In his free time, Tharaldson likes to go on walks through town with his family. He keeps busy keeping physically active and enjoying the outdoors, especially fishing throughout the year.
