The New York Mills Eagles recently wrapped up a tough three game stretch against two of the top teams in the Park Region Conference.

Braxton Ehnert was able to kick the ball out to the perimeter while falling down last week.

On Tuesday, Feb. 6, the Eagles put together one of their best games of the season against the Pillager Huskies. The Huskies are currently tied for second place in the conference, tied with Wadena-Deer Creek and trailing just Henning in the standings. The Eagles trailed by just 6 points with about 3 minutes left to play before ultimately falling by a score of 61-50.

“I love the way we played through ups and downs with confidence throughout the entire game,” said head coach Mike Baune. “We also battled physically with a very strong and athletic team, but ultimately couldn’t score enough down the stretch to win.”

Sam Kopveiler led the way offensively with 19 points, while Teagan Lausten finished with 12 points.

On Thursday, Feb. 8, the Eagles fell to fifth ranked and conference leading Henning by a score of 90-28.

“They came to play and showed why they are ranked highly in state, and we psyched ourselves out from the get-go,” said Baune.

The Eagles put together a much better game the following night when NY Mills fell to one of the top teams in the sub section in Norman County East/Ulen-Hitterdal by a score of 64-53.

“We lost 64-53 but played incredibly hard and hung around for the entire game against a very good team. To have a chance to actually win these closer games we still need to cut out a few mistakes and start making more free throws however,” said Baune.

Kopveiler once again led the way with a huge night from the floor with 21 points and 21 rebounds, while Lausten finished with 13 points and 8 rebounds. Finn Roder led the team with 7 assists.

Last week the Eagles fell to 0-21 with losses to Park Christian by a score of 73-39, Bertha-Hewitt by a score of 54-51 and Clearbrook-Gonovick by a score of 71-62.

The Eagles will wrap up the regular season with a bit of a home stand as they host Verndale on Tuesday, Battle Lake on Thursday and Rothsay on Monday, Feb. 26.
