The Chauncey Martin multipurpose building is now officially open to the public, marking a significant milestone in community collaboration. This project results from a successful partnership between the City of Pelican Rapids, Pelican Rapids School District, Otter Tail County, and several other organizations. A public ribbon-cutting ceremony was held on April 25 with many in attendance, including local first graders.

The building offers a range of amenities serving various interests, including bicyclists, school sporting events, and recreational enthusiasts. Managed and maintained by the Pelican Rapids School District, the facility is accessible to the public, including Heart of the Lake Trail users, during daylight hours or approximately 7 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Commissioner Wayne Johnson, District 2, emphasized the collaboration that led to the project. 

“This is a good deal for everyone all around. The school has an updated facility for sporting events, the city’s pickleball teams have nearby restrooms, and those using the beautiful trail have access to bike-friendly amenities,” said Johnson.

Among the many new features of the facility are accessible restrooms with ample stalls, a heated warming house, a shower room for sports officials/referees, a storage area, a spacious concession stand, and a large parking area with bike racks and a bicycle repair station.

Trevor Steeves, Pelican Rapids School District Building and Ground Superintendent led a tour during the event, showcasing the new facility’s features. Superintendent Brian Korf and Mayor Brent Frazier were among those who expressed thanks for the partnership between the Pelican Rapids School District, the City of Pelican Rapids, and Otter Tail County. They emphasized the success of the organizations working together to create a facility that will benefit and can be shared by students, residents, and visitors alike.

Additional contributions from PartnerSHIP4Health and West Central Initiative enhanced amenities such as custom bike racks and repair stations.

“This was definitely a team effort,” said County Commissioner Dan Bucholz, District 1. “Thanks to those involved in investing in the recreational and economic opportunities the trails provide in Otter Tail County.”

About the Heart of the Lakes Trail

The Heart of the Lakes Trail provides an exciting pedestrian connection between the cities of Perham and Pelican Rapids and Maplewood State Park. The trail provides direct access to several popular lakes and lets users experience the breathtaking vistas along Maplewood Ridge. 

The Minnesota Environment and Natural Resources Trust Fund provided funding for the Maplewood trail segment, as the Legislative-Citizen Commission on Minnesota Resources (LCCMR) recommended. Visit ottertailcounty.gov for more information and the County’s Master Trail map.
