The New York Mills Regional Cultural Center has announced its new gallery exhibit: “All About Wood” in the gallery from May 1 through May 25. This show features the art of several woodworking artists whose materials and styles range from whimsical to practical.
The wood pieces in this show vary from Dick Skauge’s carved figures, and Patrick Skauge’s wood spoons, to John Boots handmade paddles, a birch bark canoe by Ray Boessel, chainsaw sculptures from Scott Davis and Matt Clementson, and a remarkable carved sculpture from artist Paul Albright.
The art is beautifully made using a wide variety of woods and styles. This is a great show to purchase unique, locally-made art or place an order directly with a regional artist for a one-of-a-kind piece for your home.
Sculptor Paul Albright’s new sculpture “Orphic Egg” is a stunning new work based on ancient mythology. This large piece is carved from one piece of white pine and represents the origin of the universe and creative spirit. The Cultural Center is the first place this unique work has been shown.
Dick Skauge has been a long-time participant and supporter of the New York Mills Regional Cultural Center and his woodwork is enjoyed by all. His work in this show demonstrates his skill in working with whimsical pieces from small houses to figural work.
Several artists showing for the first time in the gallery are; Patrick Skauge with a large selection of beautiful and functional wood spoons and bowls, Scott Davis and Matt Clementson’s large-scale chainsaw sculptures, a small-scale birch bark canoe made in the traditional method by Ray Boessel of Hafeman Boat Works, and wonderfully handcrafted paddles, fishing nets, and restored vintage fly rods by John Boots.
A reception will be held on Saturday, May 25, from 1-3 p.m. Many of the artists will be on hand to talk about their work. An artists’ talk will begin at 2 p.m.
The New York Mills Regional Cultural Center Gallery is free to see and open to the public.
