Eagles improve to 12-6 overall

With the sub section tournament right around the corner, the New York Mills Eagles have seemed to hit their stride on the diamond of late. The Eagles have won six of their past seven games and eight of their past 10 games to improve to 12-6 overall.

Last week the Eagles swept Menahga in a doubleheader by scores of 13-5 and 7-5, before defeating Pillager on Tuesday by a score of 8-7. On Thursday the Eagles fell to Upsala/Swanville by a score of 10-4, before rebounding in a big way on Friday night with an 8-1 win over Wadena-Deer Creek under the lights at Smith Park.

The Eagles, who are ranked eighth in the QRF will wrap up their regular season on Tuesday night at Pine River-Backus. The sub section tournament is scheduled to get underway on Thursday night, Currently the Eagles are the top ranked team in the QRF in the sub section.

Monday

NY Mills swept a doubleheader against the Menahga Braves on Monday night. 

In the opening game of the night, the Braves took an early 5-0 lead after they scored five runs in the top of the second inning. The Eagles wasted little time in not only tying up the game, but blowing past the Braves as Finn Roder hit a fielder’s choice to bring Braxton Ehnert across the plate. Following a strike out, the next two hitters were walked to load the bases with two outs. Sam Kopveiler helped his own cause when he put his bat on the ball and reached on an error that brought three more runs across the plate. Bode Roberts tied the game up at 5-5 with an RBI single when Kopveiler crossed the plate. 

The Eagles took the lead for good in the bottom of the fourth inning when Ehnert hit a bases loaded triple to give NY Mills an 8-5 lead. Grady Roberts followed with an RBI double of his own to make the score 9-5 in favor of the Eagles. 

Ehnert led the way offensively with three hits, while Kopveiler picked up the win on the mound as he went seven innings and gave up eight hits and three earned runs.

In the second game of the night, Ehnert put the Eagles in front 2-0 when he connected with a two-run double in the top of the first inning and the Eagles hung on for a 7-5 win. 

After Menahga tied the game in the bottom of the third inning 2-2, Ehnert hit a fielder’s choice to bring the go-ahead run across the plate from third base. 

The Eagles added four more runs in the sixth inning when Bode Roberts hit a two-run single and a pair of runs scored on an error. 

Menahga made a game of it late when they scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning and had the tying run at the plate, but Grady Roberts closed the door on the Braves comeback and forced a ground ball to the third basemen to end the game by a sore of 7-5. 

Finn Roder picked up the win on the mound as he went six innings and have up five hits and two earned runs.

Tuesday

Pillager scored six runs in the top of the fifth inning, but the NY Mills Eagles scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to come away with an 8-7 win over the Pillager Huskies on Tuesday night. 

Trailing 7-5 in the bottom of the sixth inning, NY Mills loaded the bases up with one out and scored a run on an error. A Grady Roberts sacrifice fly to center field brought Sam Kopveiler across the plate to tie the game up at 7-7. With two outs and runners on first and third base, Blake Unger came through with a clutch double to put the Eagles in front for good by a score of 8-7. 

The Huskies made a game of it late when they hit a two out double, but Dashaun Robinson struck out the final hitter of the game and stranded the runner at second to come away with the 8-7 win.

Thursday

NY Mills came out on the short end of a 10-4 game to Upsala/Swanville on Thursday night. The Eagles committed four costly errors in the game that lead to six unearned runs in the loss. 

Among the highlights for the Eagles was a two out, two-run double by Braxton Ehnert in the bottom of the fifth inning to cut the Upsala-Swanville lead to 10-3. 

The Eagles were led by Sam Kopveiler, Ehnert and Blake Unger who each finished with two hits. Ehnert finished the game with three RBIs. 

Isaac Kawlewski picked up the loss on the mound as he went five innings and gave up 10 hits and four earned runs.

Friday

NY Mills wrapped up a busy five game week with a commanding 8-1 win over Wadena-Deer Creek on Friday night.

Braxton Ehnert put the Eagles on the scoreboard in the bottom of the first inning when he hit a two-run two out single. The Eagles came through with another big two out hit in the bottom of the second inning when Sam Kopveiler hit a two out two-run double to make the score 4-0 in favor of NY Mills. 

NY Mills jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the fourth inning when a pair of runs scored on an error and Robinson hit an RBI single with two outs. 

Robinson was efficient on the mound for the Eagles as he went seven innings and gave up just three hits and one unearned run. He also struck out six hitters.
