The New York Mills Eagles captured the sub section championship game and are just two wins away from advancing to a return to the state softball tournament last week.

The Eagles defeated Parkers Prairie by a score of 8-4 on Monday, before securing a 9-7 win over top seeded Browerville and an 8-7 win over Upsala in the sub section championship game. 

NY Mills will take on Clinton-Graceville-Beardsley in Morris on Tuesday. The winner of the game will advance to the Section 6A championship game on Thursday, while the loser will drop to the elimination bracket and return to action on Thursday.

Monday

Haley Korkowski collected four hits in five at bats, as the New York Mills Eagles defeated Parkers Prairie 8-4 on Monday. Korkowski tripled in the first inning, doubled in the fifth inning, singled in the sixth inning, and singled in the seventh inning.

Deserae Koljonen helped the Eagles pick up three wins last week in the sub section tournament. 

NY Mills got on the board in the first inning after Ayla Olson drew a walk, scoring one run.

Ashbaugh singled, which helped Parkers Prairie tie the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the first.

A single by Helling gave Parkers Prairie the lead, 2-1, in the bottom of the fourth.

Bella Huwe singled, which helped the Eagles tie the game at two in the top of the fifth.

Parkers Prairie jumped back into the lead in the bottom of the fifth inning after Mckeown grounded out, and Revering lined out, each scoring one run.

NY Mills took the lead, 6-4, in the top of the sixth thanks to singles by Annika Dunrud, Huwe, and Grace Brasel.

Rosemary Laudenbach earned the win for NY Mills as she allowed seven hits and four runs (two earned) over seven innings, striking out three and walking one. 

The Eagles accumulated 11 hits in the game. Huwe and Dunrud each drove in three runs for NY Mills. Olson stole four bases. 

Thursday

The NY Mills Eagles picked up a pair of wins on Thursday to advance to the Section 6A winner’s bracket championship game against Clinton-Graceville-Beardsley on Tuesday night in Morris. 

In their first game of the night, NY Mills defeated top seeded Browerville by the score of 9-7 in nine innings. 

The game was tied at 7-7 in the top of the ninth inning when Rosemary Laudenbach singled, scoring two runs. Both teams had their chances in the game, but eventually NY Mills took the lead thanks to a single in the ninth inning. 

Browerville opened the scoring in the second after Schmitt singled, scoring one run. 

NY Mills took the lead, 2-1, in the top of the third thanks to singles by Ayla Olson, and Bella Huwe. 

Myers hit into a fielder’s choice, which helped Browerville tie the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the third. 

In the top of the fifth, NY Mills broke up the tie when Grace Brasel doubled, scoring two runs. Then a passed ball followed to extend the lead to 5-2. Browerville captured the lead, 6-5, in the bottom of the fifth after Wolbeck singled, and Lorentz laid down a sacrifice bunt, each scoring two runs. 

The Eagles jumped back into the lead in the top of the sixth inning after Olson tripled, and Browerville committed an error, each scoring one run. Buhl grounded out, which helped Browerville tie the game at seven in the bottom of the sixth. 

Laudenbach earned the win for NY Mills as she gave up six hits and six runs (five earned) over 8 1/3 innings, striking out five and walking six. Annika Dunrud appeared in relief for NY Mills. 

NY Mills amassed 15 hits in the game. Brasel and Olson each collected four hits for NY Mills. Brasel, Laudenbach, and Olson each drove in two runs for NY Mills. Huwe and Haley Korkowski each collected multiple hits for the Eagles. Korkowski stole two bases. 

In the sub section championship game later on Thursday, Bella Huwe drove in five runs on three hits to lead NY Mills past Upsala 8-7. 

Huwe singled in the first scoring two, doubled in the second scoring two, and doubled in the fourth scoring one. NY Mills built a 6-run lead in the second inning and then held off Upsala’s charge. 

Upsala closed the gap by scoring on a single, a ground out, a pop out, a , and a double. 

The Eagles jumped out to the lead in the top of the first inning after Huwe singled, scoring two runs, Grace Brasel singled, scoring one run, and Taya Koljonen hit a sacrifice fly, scoring one run. NY Mills added two runs in the second. Huwe doubled, making the score 6-0. 

Annika Dunrud earned the win in the circle as she allowed two hits and four runs over 3 2/3 innings, striking out two and walking seven. Rosemary Laudenbach appeared in relief for NY Mills. 

Brasel collected two hits for NY Mills in four at bats. Haley Korkowski paced NY Mills with two walks.
