Five members of the New York Mills track and field team qualified for the Section 6A meet last week. One Eagle, Jada Goeson, even found the podium at the section meet as she took fourth place in the 800-meter run.

In addition to the sub section and section track meets, the Eagles also recently held their end of season awards ceremony. 

Award winners include: boys- most valuable: Elijah Geiser, most improved: Carl Peterman, rookie of the year: Jessiah Jesus, Eagle award: Elijah Geiser and four year award: Jeron Witt. Girls- most valuable: Jada Goeson, most improved: Morgyn O’Dea, rookie of the year: Shaila Roberts, Eagle award: Alexis Rudolph, four year award: Katherin Garcia, Alexis Rudolph, captains awards: Katherin Garcia, Alexis Rudolph, Jeron Witt and Morgyn O’Dea.

Five Eagles advanced to the section track meet after placing at the sub section track meet at Long Prairie-Grey Eagle on May 23. 

Jada Goeson led the charge for the Eagles as she took third place in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:27.48. 

Shaila Roberts advanced to the section meet with a fifth place finish in the shot put with a personal best throw of 31’, while Alexis Rudolph advanced to sections with a sixth place finish in the shot put with a person best throw of 30’10 1/4”. 

Payton Lausten took sixth place in the 300-meter hurdles to advance to sections with a time of 51.38 and Elijah Geiser qualified for the section meet with a personal best time of 5:16.89 in the 1600-meter run. He took ninth place in the sub section, but qualified based on his section time.

Other Eagles placing in the top nine at the sub section meet were: the 4×400-meter relay team of Katherin Garcia, Morgyn O’Dea, Lausten and Goeson who finished with a time of 4:30.16 and Rudolph who took ninth place in the discus with a throw of 84’3”.

Setting personal records at the sub section meet, but not advancing to sections included: O’Dea in the 400-meter dash with a time of 1:07.34, Carl Peterman in the discus with a throw of 99’7” and Jeron Witt in both the 1600-meter run with a time of 6:10.41 and the 3200-meter run with a time of 14:00.66.

Setting a season best time was Garcia in the 400-meter dash with a time of 1:06.77. 

Thursday

In a cold and what turned out to be wet day, the NY Mills track team competed in the Section 6A meet on Thursday in Pillager. To guarantee a spot at state, competitors must place in the top two in an event at the section meet.

Jada Goeson was the top finisher for the Eagles as she took fourth place in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:26.66. 

Other Eagles competing at the section meet were Payton Lausten in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 51.94, Shaila Roberts in the shot put with a throw of 39’4 1/2”, Alexis Rudolph in the shot put with a throw of 28’3” and Elijah Geiser in the 1600-meter run with a time of 5:20.01.
