Eagles give up just two unearned runs

In three games in the Section 5A tournament, the New York Mills Eagles have outscored their opponents by a combined 37-2 margin. In fact, the only two runs the Eagles have given up throughout the tournament were a pair of unearned runs against Walker-Hackensack-Akeley.

Last week the Eagles defeated Sebeka by a score of 10-0 and WHA by a score of 16-2 to capture the sub section championship and advance in the winner’s bracket of the Section 5A tournament. They were scheduled to play Ogilvie on Monday night at 7:30 p.m. for the right to advance to Thursday’s section championship game. The loser of the game dropped to the elimination bracket and will need to win Tuesday night to advance to Thursday’s title game. All of the remaining games in the section tournament will be held in Pierz.

The Eagles are currently 16-6 on the season and ranked eighth in the Class A QRF.

Tuesday

Dashaun Robinson and Sam Kopveiler combined to give up just one hit over five innings as the NY Mills Eagles blanked Sebeka 10-0 on Tuesday night. The lone hit for the Trojans was a one out double in the top of the second inning and no Sebeka runner advanced past second base on Tuesday.

Already leading 4-0, the Eagles broke the game open in the bottom of the fourth inning with six runs, including a two run bases loaded double by Robinson, a wild pitch, a passed ball and two-run double by Grady Roberts to put the Eagles up 10-0. The Trojans went down in order in the top of the fifth inning to come away with the 10-0 win in five innings. 

Roberts led the way offensively with a pair of doubles and two RBIs, while Robinson hit a single and double to go along with a pair of RBIs in the win.

Thursday

NY Mills took advantage of five Walker-Hackensack-Akeley errors and held the Wolves to just three hits as the Eagles won the sub section championship by a score of 16-2 on Thursday. The Eagles pumped out seven team hits and were patient at the plate as they drew 12 walks in the win. 

The game was close early on as the score was tied 2-2 heading into the bottom of the second inning, before the Eagle offense came alive with eight runs.

Hunter Bosman broke the tie in the bottom of the second inning when he hit a sacrifice fly to bring Finn Roder across the plate. Bosman reached on an error on the play. Teagan Lausten also reached on an error and back-to-back walks loaded the bases with just one out. Bode Roberts, Braxton Ehnert and Grady Roberts earned three straight bases loaded walks to make the score 6-2 in favor of the Eagles. Blake Unger reached on an error that brought a pair of runs across the plate to make the score 8-2. 

NY Mills ended the scoring in the inning when Lausten brought a pair of runs across the plate on a two out single to make the score 10-2. 

The Eagles scored three runs in both the third and fourth innings to end the game by the 10-run rule. 

Bode Roberts led the way offensively with three hits and four RBIs, while Lausten picked up a pair of hits and two RBIs in the win. 

Isaac Kawlewski secured the win on the mound as he gave up just a pair of unearned runs and three hits over four innings of action. He also struck out four hitters. Lausten struck out all three hitters he faced in the top of the fifth inning. 

With the win the Eagles advanced to play Ogilvie in the section winners bracket with the winner advancing to Thursday’s Section 5A championship game and the loser dropping to Tuesday’s elimination bracket. The rest of the Section 5A tournament will take place in Pierz.
