The New York Mills Millers outhit Henning by a 13-4 margin and came away with a commanding 5-1 win over the North Stars on Sunday afternoon. The win improves the Millers to 10-4 overall as they get ready for a busy stretch of games to wrap up Region 14C and Hi-10 action over the next two weeks.
On Sunday, Jacob Guck broke a scoreless tie in the top of the second inning when he reached base on a two out single. He didn’t stay on base for very long as he advanced to second on a balk, stole third and scored on a passed ball, all-while Jonah Ruther was up to bat to make the score 1-0.
Just one inning later, Brayden Ehnert hit an RBI single with two outs to bring Derin Gaudette across the plate to give the Millers a 2-0 lead. Ehnert hit a two out double and scored just one hitter later when Logan Small hit a two out double of his own to make the score 3-0 in favor of the Millers.
Small made the score 5-0 in favor of NY Mills in the seventh inning when he hit a two-run single to bring Ehnert and Jonah Johnson across the plate. Henning added a run in the eighth inning on a fielder’s choice, but would get no closer than 5-1 as Ehnert and Hunter Holtti put together a strong performance on the mound by giving up just a combined four hits and one unearned run, while striking out 10 hitters in the win.
In addition to picking up the win on the mound, Ehnert led the way offensively by getting just as many hits, four, as the entire Henning North Star team. Small added a pair of hits and three RBIs, while Zach Hocking and Guck picked up two hits apiece. In all, seven Millers secured at least one hit in the win.
