Any win over Highway 10 rival Wadena-Deer Creek is nice, but when that win is a 35-6 victory over the Wolverines as part of homecoming week—well, that’s just sweet.
The Eagles scored 35 unanswered points to roll past WDC on Friday night and spoil the Wolverines homecoming week festivities.
“We played a very good game and I was very happy with our performance. It is always nice to beat WDC who is a big rival for our kids and team,” said head coach Matt Radniecki.
After WDC scored an early touchdown on a 20-yard pass, the Eagles took the game over as Finn Roder scored on a 21-yard touchdown run to put the Eagles up 8-6 following a successful two-point conversion.
NY Mills added a pair of touchdowns in the second quarter on a Roder 7-yard run and an Braxton Ehnert 3-yard touchdown run to give the Eagles a 20-6 lead at halftime.
“The offense came out clicking and defense we did what we needed to do to get the victory,” said Radniecki. “We had some explosive plays on offense and our defense got three turnovers to win the turnover battle with a +3. When you do that good things usually happen.”
After a scoreless third quarter, Roder scored a pair of touchdowns in the fourth quarter on runs of 35 yards and 34 yards to give the Eagles a 35-6 win. Roder finished the game with four touchdowns, with three of them coming from at least 20-yards out.
“Finn Roder had a big game and the line did a nice job blocking for him. He is very explosive when he gets out in open space and we did a better job of that tonight.”
This week the 2-3 Eagles will host Breckenridge in their final regular season home game of the year. The Cowboys are also 2-3 on the season and have won two games in a row after securing a 58-22 win over Pine River-Backus on September 20 and a 14-12 win over Parkers Prairie on Friday night. They come into the game averaging 20.6 points per game on offense, while giving up 24.4 points per game on defense.
NY Mills is averaging 10.8 points per game on offense, while giving up 16.4 points per game on the defensive end of the field.
In addition to the varsity game, the Eagles JV team defeated Walker-Hackensack-Akeley by a score of 32-6 last week. Tony Nichols had a solid game for the JV team and the junior high football team defeated WDC 14-6 to make it three wins for NY Mills last week on the gridiron.
