The New York Mills Eagles came just one game short of a second straight trip to the FargoDome as the team fell to top seeded West Central Area by a score of 42-18 on Saturday afternoon. The game came on the heels of a 28-6 win over Walker-Hackensack-Akeley on Tuesday night. Tuesday’s win avenged an earlier loss to the Wolves.

NY Mills ends their season with a record of 4-6 overall and advanced to the semi-finals of the Section 6A tournament.

Tuesday

After being shut out by Walker-Hackensack-Akeley 34-0 earlier this season, the NY Mills Eagles got the last laugh as they went on the road and upset the fourth seeded Wolves 28-6 on Tuesday night. It was the second straight year the Eagles received the fifth seed in the section and pulled off an upset win the opening round of the playoffs.

“It is always good to come back and beat a team that beat you during the regular season,” said head coach Matt Radniecki. “The team played very well tonight and we had a good game plan that the players executed very well. We made some big plays on offense, defense, and special teams. We won all three phases of the game and we won the turnover battle which is always huge.”

The Eagles took an early lead in the first quarter when Finn Roder broke loose for a 21-yard touchdown run to give NY Mills a 6-0 lead.

NY Mills struck again in the second quarter when Blake Unger picked off a pass and returned it 22-yards for a touchdown. The Eagles converted the two-point conversion to give them a 14-0 lead at halftime.

Braxton Ehnert made the score 22-0 when he found Roder on an 11-yard touchdown pass and converted the duo repeated the pass and catch on the two-point conversion.

WHA tried to make a game of it in the third quarter when they scored on a 34-yard touchdown pass, but Ruther made the score 28-6 in the fourth quarter when he scored on a 16-yard touchdown run. The extra point was no good.

Radniecki said he was proud of the effort of the Eagles on Tuesday night, but was also appreciative of the fans who came out to support the team on the road.

“Thanks to all the parents for our tremendous team meals and also for your support and fans support at our games,” said Radniecki. “It was outstanding on Tuesday night in Walker.”

NY Mills came out on the short end of a 42-18 loss to top seeded West Central Area on Saturday afternoon. The game was tight throughout much of the first half, before the Knights eventually pulled away late in the game.

With the win the West Central Area Knights will head to the FargoDome to take on the third seeded Parkers Prairie Panthers in the Section 6A championship game. The game is set for Friday at 12:30 p.m.
