Five wrestlers take first place at Rodd Olson Invitational

0Twelve Eagles place at Crookston tournament
New York Mills came home with its fair share of hardware over the weekend as five individual champions were crowned and the wrestling team took first place at the annual Rodd Olson Invitational. The tournament was held in Crookston and 12 wrestlers placed individually.
Among the wrestlers who took first place was Carlyle Tumberg, Elijah O’Dea, Creed Mursu, Austin Geiser and Grady Roberts.
This week the wrestlers will participate in a dual with Wadena-Deer Creek n Thursday night, before heading to Pequot Lakes on Friday night for a tournament on Friday and Saturday.
Tuesday
The NY Mills Eagles dropped a pair of matches against Osakis and West Central Area on Tuesday night.
In their match against the Silverstreaks, the Eagles were unable to overcome six losses by fall or forfeit as they came out on the short end of a 40-30 score.
Elijah O’Dea secured an exiting 21-17 decision over Zackery Bruder of Osakis to put the Eagles on the scoreboard at 121 lbs. Finn Wallgreen followed with a 9-5 decision at 121 lbs. and Creed Mursu gave NY Mills a brief 12-10 lead when he pinned Ashton Pastian just two seconds into the second period at 133 lbs.
Unfortunately, the Silverstreaks went on a four match pin streak to take the lead for good and hand the Eagles the loss.
NY Mills also got wins from Austin Geiser at 172 lbs., Blake Unger at 189 lbs. and Grady Roberts at 285 lbs. who all secured pins in the match.
In their dual against West Central Area, the Eagles were only able to come away with a pair of wins as they fell by a score of 57-7. The two wins came from Tony Nichols by major decision at 145 lbs. and Austin Geiser by an 11-7 decision at 172 lbs.

Saturday
On Saturday NY Mills made the trek up north to Crookston to participate in the annual Rodd Olson Invitational. The Eagles crowned five champions and 12 wrestlers placed on their way to the team championship in the nine team tournament.
NY Mills secured 197 team points to edge Walker-Hackensack-Akeley who finished in second place with 124 points.
Carlyle Tumberg captured first place at 114 lbs. after he secured a pair of pins in the opening two rounds of the tournament to advance to the championship match. In the championship, Tumberg secured a commanding 9-2 decision over Samuel Strom of United Clay Becker to capture first place.
Elijah O’Dea secured first place at 121 lbs. after he picked up a pin in the opening round of the match, before securing a close 11-10 decision over Cash Bullock of WHA in the semi-finals. In the championship match O’Dea secured another one point decision as he got the best of Justin Torroll of Hillsboro by a 14-13 decision to capture first place.
Creed Mursu picked up a pair of decisions at 133 lbs. to take first place and improve to 7-2 on the season. After securing a 12-8 decision in the second round of the tournament, Mursu captured first place with a 12-7 decision over Chase Whitney of WHA.
Austin Geiser improved to 10-0 on the season with a tech fall, pin and major decision at 160 lbs. His final match was an 8-0 major decision over Dylan McMullen of Mahnomen-Waubun in the third round of the tournament.
Also capturing first place was Grady Roberts who pinned his way to the championship match with a pair of first period pins in the opening two rounds of the tournament. In the championship
match Roberts defeated Riley Helgeson of Crookston by a 3-2 decision to capture first place.
In addition tot he five individual champions, senior Blake Unger advanced to the championship match after securing a tech fall and a 10-5 decision at 189 lbs. In the championship match Unger dropped a close 1-0 decision to Blake McMullen of Mahnomen-Waubun to finish in second place.
