The New York Mills girls basketball team split a pair of games against a pair of Class AA teams last week to improve to 2-2 overall and 1-1 in the Park Region Conference.
On Tuesday night the Eagles defeated Park Rapids Area, by a score of 73-65, before falling to Wadena-Deer Creek on Friday night by a score of 61-51.
This week the Eagles traveled to Norman County East/Ulen-Hitterdal on Monday night, before traveling to Parkers Prairie on Thursday in a pair of non-conference games.
Next Friday and Saturday the Eagles will travel to Pelican Rapids for the annual Pelican Rapids tournament, before wrapping up the 2024 portion of their schedule.
Tuesday
Alayna Baune scored 22 points and Ayla Olson scored 17 as the NY Mills Eagles powered past Park Rapids Area 73-65 on Tuesday night. The Eagle post players were able to control the paint throughout the game, while Baune also added eight free throw makes in the win as well.
NY Mills took an early 40-30 lead at halftime and were able to hold on thanks to seven made 3-pointers, including three each from Gabi Vaden and Annika Dunrud. Vaden finished with 15 points after hitting all three of her 3-pointers in the second half, while Dunrud also reached double figures with 11 points.
Rosemary Laudenbach and Chloe Costin each scored four points in NY Mills’ win.
Friday
NY Mills outscored Wadena-Deer Creek by a 35-26 margin in the second half on Friday night. Unfortunately, the strong second half couldn’t overcome a tough opening 18 minutes from the field for the Eagles as they fell 61-51 to the Wolverines on Friday night.
The Eagles trailed 35-16 at halftime, but Alayna Baune scored 15 of her team-high 18 points in the second half to lead a fevered comeback effort. Ayla Olson scored 12 points and Violet Radniecki chipped in with a pair of 3-pointers to finish with six points on the night. Meanwhile, Gabi Vaden, Rosemary Laudenbach and Annika Dunrud each finished with five points in the loss.
