After a brief period of uncertainty, a bit of stability has come to the City of Deer Creek.

Miriam DeCock has taken over as the city’s new clerk/treasurer following the retirement of long-time clerk/treasurer Tom Parish and sudden departure of his replacement this summer.

DeCock began her duties with the city in mid September and has enjoyed the opportunity to be a bigger part of the Deer Creek community. Prior to coming to the City of Deer Creek, DeCock was teaching school online, in addition to helping her children on a daily basis who are home schooled.

However, earlier this year she decided she needed a change and opted not to teach online again this fall.

“I had been teaching online for a few years and it just got to be too much so I decided to take a year off,” she said.

While she wasn’t necessarily planning to enter the public sector, DeCock received a call from her husband Bill about a conversation he had with longtime city councilman Dan Hendershot.

“I got a call from my husband and he said I bet you are going to say no, but do you want to be the city clerk,” said DeCock.

Perhaps to the surprise of her husband Bill, DeCock considered the opportunity and began working in the City of Deer Creek office this fall.

Since beginning her new opportunity as Deer Creek City Clerk/Treasurer, DeCock said she has enjoyed the opportunity to problem solve and work through challenges. She has also enjoyed the opportunity to get to work with the public and visit with local residents.

The Deer Creek City office is open three days a week, from 4-6 p.m. on Mondays and 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays. The office is located in the Deer Creek Community Center. For more information about the City of Deer Creek, contact (218) 462-2001.
