NYM senior gets 1,000th career rebound

With about two minutes remaining in Tuesday’s Park Region Conference game against Menahga, Ayla Olson pulled down her 1,000th career rebound to eclipse yet another major milestone in her high school career. Already with 1,000 career digs, sets and assists in volleyball, Olson has now entered a rare group with 1,000 career rebounds for the New York Mills Eagles.

While the Eagles fell to Menahga in the game by a score of 64-49, Olson finished with 22 points and 17 rebounds in the loss.

In addition to Tuesday’s game, the Eagles defeated Bertha-Hewitt 67-39 on Thursday night to improve to 6-5 overall and 3-2 in the Park Region Conference.

This week the Eagles have just one game on their schedule as they host Henning on Tuesday night, before hosting Verndale next Monday in a pair of Park Region Conference games. On Tuesday, Jan. 21 the Eagles will travel to Browerville to take on the Tigers, before returning home on Thursday, Jan. 23 to host the Sebeka Trojans.

Tuesday

Ayla Olson had a monster game for the Hornets as she scored 22 points and pulled down her 17th rebound late in the game to not only record a double-double, but eclipse 1,000 career rebounds for the Eagles. Olson pulled down her 1,000th rebound with about two minutes remaining in the game against Menahga.

The Eagles trailed early against the Braves, who entered the game with a perfect 9-0 record overall and 6-0 in the conference, but kept the game close before falling 64-49. It was the closest game the Braves have had all season up to that point, before they were able to defeat Wadena-Deer Creek on Thursday by a score of 53-45.

The Eagles were led offensively by Olson with her 22 points, while Rosemary Laudenbach also reached double figures with 11 points. Gabi Vaden scored six, Violet Radniecki scored five, Annika Dunrud scored three and Chloe Costin rounded out the scoring with two points.

Thursday

NY Mills got back in the win column on Thursday night as the Eagles defeated Bertha-Hewitt by a score of 67-39. NY Mills led by a score of 40-15 at the halftime break. 

The Eagles were once again led by Ayla Olson who hit four 3-pointers, including three in the first half alone, while Gabi Vaden scored 14 points and Rosemary Laudenbach chipped in with 11 points. 

Alayna Baune scored nine points, Alise Schornack scored eight, Chloe Costin scored two and Violet Radniecki rounded out the scoring with one point.
