Roberts, Unger take second place

Creed Mursu took first place, while Grady Roberts and Blake Unger placed second at the annual Park Region Conference tournament on Saturday.

Mursu won a 7-3 decision over Brodie Pachan of Long Prairie-Grey Eagle/Browervile to capture first place at the 127 lbs. tournament, while Unger took second at 189 lbs. and Roberts took second at 285 lbs. 

The tournament capped off a busy week for the Eagle wrestlers as they defeated Wadena-Deer Creek on Tuesday and fell to fourth ranked United North Central on Thursday night. 

Tuesday

NY Mills secured a thrilling 32-32 win over Wadena-Deer Creek on Tuesday afternoon. The match was tied but the Eagles picked up the important Section 6A win over the Wolverines due to the tiebreaker.

The Eagles blew past the Wolverines in the upper weights by securing four straight wins from 160 lbs. to 215 lbs., while Grady Roberts did what he needed to do in the heavyweight match and not lose by anything more than a decision. He fell to Matthew Wegscheid by a 5-3 decision, but it was enough for the Eagles to secure the victory.

Securing wins for the Eagles was Oakley Kern who won by a fall at 107 lbs., Carlyle Tumberg who won by a 9-6 decision at 127 lbs., Creed Mursu who won by a fall at 133 lbs., Tony Nichols who secured a tech fall at 160 lbs., Weston Simpson who secured an 8-6 decision at 172 lbs., Blake Unger who won a decision at 189 lbs. and Ashton Lehmann who won by a pin at 215 lbs. to give the Eagles the lead for good.

Thursday

The NY Mills Eagles fell to fourth ranked United North Central by a score of 59-10 on Thursday night.

The two teams had open weights in seven of the 13 weight classes as just six total matches were wrestled between the two teams. The Eagles were open in six of those seven weight classes, while UNC forfeited just the 152 lbs. weight class

The lone victories for the Eagles came by Creed Mursu at 127 lbs. by a major decision and Tony Nichols by a forfeit at 152 lbs.

Saturday

In a preview of many of the same teams that the Eagles will face in the Section 6A tournament, the NY Mills wrestlers traveled to Underwood on Saturday for the annual Park Region Conference tournament. 

The Eagles took fifth place as a team as United North Central captured first place with 182 points. Long Prairie-Grey Eagle/Browerville took second place with 166 points, Osakis was third with 162 points, Bertha-Hewitt/Verndale/Parkers Prairie was fourth with 144.5 points, NY Mills was fifth with 87 points, Wadena-Deer Creek was sixth with 84 points, Otter Tail Central was seventh with 79 points and Red Rock Central was eighth with 47.5 points.

Creed Mursu captured first place at 127 lbs. after he secured a pin over Peter Newark of Otter Tail Central in the quarterfinals, before securing a 7-3 decision over ninth ranked Sam Roiko of United North Central in the semi-finals. In the finals, Mursu defeated Brodie Pachan of Long Prairie-Grey Eagle/Browerville by a 7-3 decision to finish in first place.

Blake Unger took second place at 189 lbs. after he won an 8-0 major decision over William Schwartz of Otter Tail Central in the semi-finals. In the finals, Unger fell to Riley Livingston of United North Central by a 2-0 decision to finish in second place.

Grady Roberts secured a pair of second period pins in the quarterfinals and semi-finals to advance to the championship match against Kevin Dailey of United North Central. Unfortunately, Dailey was able to pin Roberts to capture the 285 lbs. championship.

Also placing for the Eagles was Carlyle Tumberg who took sixth place at 121 lbs., Tony Nichols who took fourth place at 145 lbs. and Joe Mann who took fourth place at 172 lbs.
