The New York Mills Speech team traveled to Fergus Falls on Saturday, Jan. 25. The Eagles placed 11th out of 17 teams (above). 

Individual awards went to Elijah Geiser (first place in Poetry with his interpretation of the poem “Ren” by Ren Gills), Brooke Sonsalla (third place in Discussion–this year’s discussion tasks surround the nature of work post-pandemic ), and Payton Lausten (fourth place in Prose with her interpretation of The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid).

The New York Mills Speech team traveled to Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton on Saturday, Feb. 1. NY Mills’ speech team placed eighth out of 18 teams (right). 

Individual awards went to:

• Elijah Geiser – Champion in Poetry with his interpretation of the poem “Ren” by Ren Gills

• Soren Stout – Champion in Discussion (this year’s discussion tasks surround the nature of work post-pandemic)

• Brooke Sonsalla – third place in Discussion and Excellence in Original Oratory with the persuasive speech she wrote to shed light on how first responders silently struggle with PTSD and advocate for increased awareness and support.

• Julia Johnson – fifth place in Great Speeches with her analysis of former Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard’s 2012 speech to parliament using a simplification of Bitzer’s Rhetorical Situation.

• Payton Lausten – Excellence in Prose with her Interpretation of Taylor Jenkin Reid’s New York Times Bestselling Novel The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo.
