Eagles edge Bulldogs for 20th win of the season

The New York Mills Eagles will open the sub section tournament on Thursday night when the Eagles host sixth seeded Ada-Borup West.
NY Mills received the third seed in a top heavy sub section featuring Hillcrest, who is ranked eighth in the QRF with a record of 22-4, Underwood who received the second seed with a record of 21-5 and a QRF ranking of 26, fourth seeded Park Christian who is 17-9 overall and 39th in the QRF and fifth seeded Lake Park-Audubon who is also 17-9 on the season and ranked 48th in the QRF.
The Eagles are currently 20-6 overall and ranked 30th in the QRF and received the third seed in the sub section. Thursday’s game against the Cougars will begin at 7 p.m. in NY Mills. Ada-Borup West is currently 13-11 overall and ranked 52nd in the QRF.
The winner of the game will take on either second seeded Underwood or the winner of seventh seeded Rothsay and 10th seeded Henning on Saturday afternoon at 2:45 p.m.
Last week the Eagles had their 14 game winning streak snapped against Hillcrest Lutheran Academy by a score of 48-42. The Comets received the top seed in the sub section and was just the second time Hillcrest had a game within single digits since January 11.
In addition to Tuesday’s loss, NY Mills ended the regular season on Thursday night with a commanding 72-38 win over Swanville on the road to improve to 20-6 on the season.
Tuesday
NY Mills held a potent Hillcrest Comet offense to just 16 points in the first half, but were unable to hang on in the final 18 minutes of play to have their 14 game win streak snapped on Tuesday night by a score of 48-42.
The Eagles led by a score of 21-16 at halftime after Annika Dunrud knocked down a pair of 3-pointers and Ayla Olson scored nine points in the first half, but the Comets were able to make the most of their opportunities down the stretch as they hit nine 3-pointers to keep their bid for a top seed in the sub section alive.
Olson led the Eagles in scoring with 22 points, while Dunrud finished with three 3-pointers to score nine points. Alayna Baune finished with four points, while Violet Radniecki scored three and Chloe Costin finished the night with two points in the loss.
Thursday
The Eagles wrapped up their regular season in style on Thursday night as they came away with a 72-38 win over Swanville. In all, nine Eagles reached the scoring column with three players reaching double figures as NY Mills picked up its 20th win of the season on Thursday.
After taking a 29-21 lead at halftime, NY Mills was able to overwhelm Swanville offensively in the second half as they outscored the Bulldogs by a 43-17 margin. Much of the success in the second half came from Gabi Vaden who scored 15 of her team-high 20 points in the final 18 minutes, as well as Ayla Olson who scored 11 of her 18 points in the second half as well/
Also reaching double figures for the Eagles was Rosemary Laudenbach who hit three 3-pointers to finish with 15 points, while Alayna Baune scored eight points, Annika Dunrud scored five points, while Ellyana Ruther, Chloe Costin, Dixie Dykhoff and Violet Radniecki rounded out the scoring with two points apiece.
