Payton Lausten, Elijah Geiser, and Brooke Sonsalla will compete at the MSHSL State Tournament, hosted by Shakopee High School, on April 25–26.

On Saturday, April 12, NYM Speech qualifiers competed at the Section 6A Tournament hosted in Menagha by UNC. To qualify for State, competitors must place first, second, or third in their event. Seventh grader Hadlie Lien was called in last minute as an alternate in Discussion, while eighth grader Marissa Uselman and tenth grader Owen Johnson competed in Extemporaneous Reading. Unfortunately, Lien, Uselman, and Johnson did not score high enough in the prelims to advance to the final round.

Seniors Soren Stout and Brooke Sonsalla advanced to the final round of Discussion, with Soren placing 6th and Brooke earning 2nd. Junior Payton Lausten advanced to the final round of Prose and placed 2nd, and junior Elijah Geiser advanced to the final round of Poetry, placing 2nd. Notably, while all four finalists are in their final years of high school, this is only their second year competing in Speech. Lausten, Sonsalla, and Geiser will compete at the MSHSL State Tournament, hosted by Shakopee High School, on April 25–26. The last time NYM qualified three students to State was in 2016—two of whom are now NYM Speech coaches.
