Young track team opens season with a pair of meets

The New York Mills track team kicked off its season with a pair of meets over the past two weeks.
The team opened its season on Thursday, April 10 when they traveled to Pillager for an invite, before heading to Park Rapids last week for another outdoor meet.
The Eagles will return to action on Thursday when they travel to Pillager for another outdoor meet.
April 10
Out of the 16 athletes who competed on April 10, six Eagles were participating in their first-ever track meet.
Head coach Steve Dunrud said the coaches were pleased with the effort and results from their opening meet of the season. He said with continued work the Eagles are looking forward to seeing improvement with everyone’s times and distances every week.
Leading the charge for the Eagles was the 4×200-meter relay team of Jake Martinez Zavala, Carter Lien, Grayson Meyer and Elijah Geiser who finished in eighth place with a time of 1:56.92.
The 4×100-meter relay team also finished in eighth place with a time of 55.33. Team members included Martinez Zavala, Lien, Meyer and Tony Nichols.
Also placing for the boys team was Geiser who took seventh place in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:27.19 and Nichols who took eighth place in the 200-meter dash with a time of 25.53.
On the girls side of the track, the 4×200-meter relay team of Payton Lausten, Lyla Hersch, Lilja Pakkala and Rosie Tumberg took sixth place in the 4×200-meter relay with a time of 2:12.98.
Individually, Shaila Roberts took eighth place in the discus with a throw of 79’10”.
Thursday
The NY Mills boys placed ninth and the girls took 11th place in Park Rapids on Thursday evening.
The girls team was led by Shaila Roberts who took seventh place with a season best throw in the shot put of 27’. Meanwhile, Payton Lausten took eighth place with a season best time in the 300-meter hurdles of 56.50.
On the boys side, the 4×400-meter relay team of Tony Nichols, Elijah Geiser, Jake Martinez Zavala and Carter Lien placed fourth with a time of 4:15.
Nichols also placed in the top six in a pair of events, including the 200-meter dash with a personal best time of 25.0 and a sixth place finish in the long jump with a personal best of 17’10”.
Posting a personal record, but not placing in the top eight overall were: Tony Nichols, 100-meter dash with a time of 12.55; Jake Martinez Zavala, 100-meter dash with a time of 12.99; Carter Lien, 400-meter dash with a time of 1:03.43; Elijah Kaufmann, discus with a throw of 80’7”; Kaitlynn Dittmann, 100-meter dash with a time of 16.83 and the 200-meter dash with a time of 35.7; Lucia Constant, 100-meter dash with a time of 16.95; Ellery Korkowski, 200-meter dash with a time of 34.6; Lilja Pakkala, 200-meter dash with a time of 33.20, discus with a throw of 58’3” and long jump with a jump of 11’11 ½”; Ava Carlson, shot put with a throw of 19’11 ½” and discus with a throw of 50’ ½”; Ella Holmes, shot put with a throw of 21’1 ¾” and discus 62’2”; Rosie Tumberg, long jump with a jump of 9’9 ¾” and Rachel Tumberg, long jump with a jump of 11’2”.
Posting a season best, but not placing in the top eight overall were: Elijah Geiser, 800-meter run with a time of 2:22.60; Elijah Kaufmann, 200-meter dash with a time of 31.30; Lily Roberts, 100-meter dash with a time of 15.51; Payton Lausten, 300-meter hurdles with a time of 56.50 and Shaila Roberts, shot put with a throw of 27’0”.
