New York Mills Eagles had a doubleheader against Wadena-Deer Creek last week.

In the opening game of the night, the Eagles fell to WDC 6-5 in eight innings. NY Mills opened the scoring in the top of the second inning when they scored on an error. The Wolverines took a 4-1 lead in the bottom of the third inning when Jada Dykhoff hit a bases clearing triple and Jenna Dykhoff followed with an RBI single to give WDC the lead.

NY Mills tied the game at 4-4 on a Taya Koljonen RBI single in the fifth inning as part of a three-run rally.

In extra innings, Kalyn Balbach gave the Eagles a 5-4 lead when she hit into a fielder’s choice to bring a run in from third base. Unfortunately, WDC scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to overtake the Eagles by a score of 6-5.

Chloe Costin led the way offensively with a pair of hits, including a double.

Rosemary Laudenbach took the loss in the circle as she went 7 1/3 innings, giving up nine hits and six runs to go along with two strikeouts.

In the second game of the night, WDC took advantage of five Eagle errors on their way to a 15-10 win.

The Wolverines took a commanding 12-1 lead after the top of the third inning, before NY Mills scored two runs in the third, six  in the fourth and one more in the fifth inning to cut into that lead a bit.

The Eagles were led offensively by Taya Koljonen with a pair of singles, while Abby Berndt went 2-4 with a pair of runs scored and a double and Ayla Olson had a pair of RBIs and a triple in the loss.

Berndt took the loss in the circle going two innings and giving up eight hits, 10 runs of which four were earned, three walks and a pair of strikeouts. Laudenbach pitched the final five innings of the game and gave up six hits, five runs of which three were earned and struck out a pair of hitters.

The pair of losses drops the Eagles to 4-4 on the season and 3-4 in the Park Region Conference. This week the Eagles will travel to Pillager for a doubleheader on Tuesday, before hosting Bertha-Hewitt/Verndale on Friday. They will return to action on Monday when they host Frazee in non-conference action, before hosting Sebeka in another conference doubleheader on Tuesday, May 6.
