0During Child Foster Care Month, Otter Tail County is asking individuals and families to consider becoming foster parents. With the number of children needing safe, stable homes increasing, there is a need for caring foster families.
“Otter Tail County prioritizes placing children with relatives whenever possible; family restoration is our ultimate goal,” shared Stephanie Olson, Human Services Supervisor. “However, there are times when this is not an option, and we look to our community to help provide safe homes for children.”
Why foster care is needed
Foster care offers children a temporary home while their families work through challenges. Foster parents provide stability and emotional support, making a lasting impact on the lives of vulnerable children. The need for foster families in Otter Tail County spans all ages, from infants to teenagers.
“There are children in our community who need a safe, loving place to stay,” said Jody Dahlen, Otter Tail County’s Child Foster Care Licensor. “Foster parents have an opportunity to make a difference in a child’s life. We are asking families to consider standing in the gap and offering a home to a child.”
Who can become a foster parent?
Foster parents come from all walks of life. Whether you’re married or single, a homeowner or a renter, or have children, you can make a positive impact. Otter Tail County provides the necessary licensing process, resources, and ongoing support to ensure foster parents feel prepared and confident in their role.
“Love them and let them go? Yes, it sounds hard, and it is,” shared a foster mom. “Maybe it’s not for everyone, but does it take a special kind of superhuman quality? I don’t think so. Everyone, if they look deep enough will see that they too can find room to love another child for a little while.”
Support a foster family
Even if you cannot become a foster parent, you can help foster families in your community in many ways. You can provide used toys and books, help with meals, or offer support with daily tasks.
