Wednesday
In order to avoid inclement weather at the end of the week, the NY Mills Eagles participated in a rare split doubleheader in two different towns on Wednesday afternoon.
After playing Wadena-Deer Creek at noon in Wadena, the Eagles then loaded the bus to head back to NY Mills where they hosted Bertha-Hewitt/Verndale. Unfortunately, the Eagles fell to WDC 5-4, but were able to salvage the day with a 5-4 win over the Raiders to end the week 2-1 and improve to 10-8 overall.
In the opening game of the day, NY Mills took an early lead, but ultimately fell to WDC by a score of 5-4.
The Eagles scored a pair of runs in the top of the first inning on a pair of fielder’s choices off the bats of Braxton Ehnert and Grady Roberts.
WDC tied the score at 2-2 in the third inning, before Unger put NY Mills back in front with a two-run double in the fifth inning. The Wolverines tied the game a 4-4 in the bottom half of the fifth inning on a two-run home run by Kobe Snyder, before taking the lead for good in the sixth inning with a one out RBI single by Jaydyn Kenney.
Unger led the way offensively with a pair of hits for the Eagles.
Finn Roder took the loss on the mound as he went six innings and gave up five hits and five runs, while striking out four.
In their game against the Raiders, NY Mills found itself down 4-0 after the Raiders struck for four runs in the top of the second inning. However, the Eagles were able to overtake the Raiders with a tremendous five run bottom of the seventh inning where seven straight runners reached base safely to come away with a 5-4 win.
After Everett Ruther led off the inning with a single, the next Eagle batter struck out, setting up a stretch of six straight singles. Blake Unger put the Eagles on the scoreboard with an RBI single, before Braxton Ehnert hit a two-run single to make the score 4-3. Grady Roberts followed with an RBI single and Kolston Lofgren put the Eagles in front 5-4 with a sixth straight single.
BHV had a chance to tie the game in the top of the seventh inning when Unger walked the bases loaded with two outs, but was able to force a ground out to Roberts at first base to come away with the win.
Ehnert led the way offensively with three hits and a pair of RBIs, while Lofgren and Hunter Bosman each finished with two hits. Ehnert also picked up the win on the mound as he gave up just two hits and four runs of which three were earned, while striking out five hitters. Unger pitched a scoreless seventh inning by not surrendering a hit, but walking three and striking out a pair of batters.
