NYM finishes regular season with 13-7 record

The New York Mills Eagles wrapped up their regular season with a big 8-5 win over Browerville in non-conference action on Wednesday night. The win helped to cement the Eagles as the second seed in the sub section tournament as they will host seventh seeded Long Prairie-Grey Eagle on Tuesday night at home. 

The winner of Tuesday’s game will take on the winner of third seeded Parkers Prairie and sixth seeded Frazee on Thursday night in Browerville. The sub section tournament will continue next Tuesday, May 27 in Browerville with the section championship game being held on May 29.

On the other side of the sub section tournament, top seeded Swanville will take on eighth seeded Brandon-Evansville and fourth seeded Upsala will take on fifth seeded Browerville.

The NY Mills Eagles secured a tie for third place in the Park Region Conference with a 9-8 win over the Parkers Prairie Panthers on Thursday, May 8. The Eagles and Panthers both finished the conference season with a record of 10-4 overall, behind just Wadena-Deer Creek and Menahga who tied for the conference title with a record of 12-2.

In their game against the Panthers, Ayla Olson drove in four runs and had three hits as the Eagles defeated Parkers Prairie 9-8. Olson’s big day included a three-run home run in the third inning, while also connecting with an RBI single in the second inning. 

In addition to Olson, Deserae Koljonen hit a two-run home run to get the scoring going in the top of the first inning for NY Mills. 

The Eagles were led offensively by Olson who went 3-3 with four RBIs, while Rosemary Laudenbach picked up the win in the circle as she pitched all seven innings, giving up nine hits, eight runs of which five were earned, while striking out five and giving up seven walks.

NY Mills dropped three games in the annual Jackson County Central Tournament on Saturday, May 10. The Eagles fell to Class AAA Albert Lea by a score of 13-6, before falling to Class AA Jackson County Central by a score of 10-3 and Class AA Zumbrota-Mazeppa by a score of 11-10. 

Among the highlights of the tournament were a pair of home runs by Ayla Olson, which included a two-run home run against Albert Lea and a solo home run against Zumbrota-Mazeppa.

In their game against Zumbrota-Mazeppa, the Eagles outhit Z-M by a 13-9 margin, but fell in a wild 11-10 game in eight innings. 

Tied at 6-6 in the seventh inning, the game went into extra innings where Z-M scored five runs in the top of the eighth inning, before the Eagles had their comeback come up just short with four runs of their own in the eighth. Trailing 6-4 in the bottom of the sixth inning, NY Mills tied the game when Bella Huwe connected on a sacrifice fly and the Eagles added another run on an error to tie the game at 6-6. 

As a team, Olson finished with three hits, while Huwe, Taya Koljonen and Aurora Jabas each finished with two hits in the loss.
