There were five members of the New York Mills School staff that hung up their hats this spring as they entered retirement.

Doug Salo

Fifth grade teacher, Doug Salo, completed his 40th year of teaching this spring. He began teaching in Waldorf-Pemberton during his first year, before moving back home to teach.

Salo spent two years teaching sixth grade, one year in the fourth grade classrooms, and finally settled on fifth grade, where he spent 37 years teaching students.

“Getting to know families and students,” Salo said was his favorite part of the job.

He looks forward to spending time with his wife, Becky, and focusing on their family.

Matt Radniecki

Activities Director, football coach, and former teacher, Matt Radniecki has spent the past 37 years in the NY Mills School District. He began with the district in 1988 as a third grade teacher and has since taught, coached and worked with a variety of students and positions. He retired from teaching including the Gifted and Talented program as well as RTI Math in 2022 and has since worked solely as the Activities Director and football coach since that time.

Radniecki mentioned that he enjoyed making life long relationships with students and co-workers while teaching in NY Mills. He is looking forward to slowing down and enjoying his retirement.

Nancy Schik

Elementary Librarian, Nancy Schik, has worked at the NY Mills school for the past 28 years, the past 22 being in the library.

“I enjoyed working with the staff and also seeing the students excited to get books to check out and read,” she said. “I am looking forward to spending more time with my husband, Paul, and maybe do some traveling. Also helping out with the grandkids.”

Schik said she is also looking forward to having a more flexible schedule and being able to do what she decides to on a given day.

Theresa Bloomquist and Deb Blomberg

Elementary Paraprofessional Theresa Bloomquist and Special Education Teacher Deb Blomberg are also retiring this year. The retirees were honored at the end of the school year for their hard work and dedication over the years.
