A new emergency siren was installed on Monday, June 9 in Hidden Trails Park. A large portion of the $36,000 cost for the siren was funded through a grant from Otter Tail County. The siren will be tested on Friday, June 20 at 1 p.m.

A new emergency siren was installed in Hidden Trails Park on Monday, June 9.

The City of New York Mills was able to add this emergency siren through grant funds received from the 2024 Otter Tail County Hazard Mitigation Project Assistance Grant Program. The grant paid for $20,000 of the $36,000 cost to purchase and install the siren.

The city received many reports of concern that the emergency siren located in Smith Park was not loud enough for residents on the south side of the tracks to hear. The grant opportunity was a way to get the second siren installed in order to make sure that everyone in town could hear the siren in case of emergency.

The siren will be tested on June 20, at 1 p.m. The city will be sending out text my cover messages and have a notice posted on the city website and facebook page. There will also be some posters put up around town to try to make the public aware that the test will be happening on June 20.

In the future the siren will be tested each month on the first Wednesday of each month at 1 p.m.
