It’s summertime and for the New York Mills Public Library, that means the Summer Reading Program is underway as kids and families of all ages have additional opportunities to fill their schedules for the next few months.

“It’s our opportunity to provide programming for kids,” said Library Director, Julie Adams. “They have more time now during the summer and our goal is just to provide some fun activities for kids and families.”

Adams has continued to provide this summer program for the NY Mills community ever since she started in 1993. She finds the program to be a great opportunity for students in NY Mills and the surrounding areas to continue reading throughout the summer, engage in educational activities, as well as interact with other youth once the school year’s over.

“Our two biggest things that we’ve been focusing on lately is to provide some good, fun, family actives,” said Adams. “For example, the music program that we’ll be doing on the 25th, Birds of a Feather, and also the reading challenge is a really big part of it. Kids read at home and keep track of it on a sheet and then they can come pick up some prizes.

“So those are the two biggest things,” she continued. “But we have some other additional things like Lego Club and some fun activities in the building too.”

The Birds of a Feather program will showcase the talents of musicians Ann Torralba and Suzi Shelton as they perform original songs for all ages. The event will take place Wednesday, June 25 at 2 p.m. in the NY Mills City Hall Ballroom. This event is free and open to all ages.

“They’re wonderful entertainers,” said Adams, “Both of these ladies have successful solo careers within the children’s music world, but they just recently did a duo album together, so it’s a new thing for them as well.”

Another event will be coming up on Wednesday, July 23 at 1 p.m. at the Library which will feature The Wonder Weavers, who will perform their puppets, magic and storytelling. This event is also free and open to all ages. Preregistration to Library events is highly encouraged to help staff accommodate everyone.

“I know sometimes it’s not possible to preregister,” said Adams, “I still want people to show up if you can’t, but it really helps us to know how many to prepare for, how many chairs to set up, et cetera.”

Preregistration is quick and easy and can be done by stopping in, calling or emailing the Library and letting Julie, Shelly, or Kendal know how many are planning to attend a given event. From Lego Club to the Summer Reading Challenge and each event in between, the NY Mills Public Library has something for everyone this summer.
